So the motor on my RTR is running sweet but it's cheap (60 bucks new) and I don't expect it to last as long as a quality motor. It's also slow compared to the OS motors and other high end stuff the guys are running at the track. I made noob mistakes with this motor which is why I went cheap. I didn't want to wreck something nice while learning how to tune. She's dialed now and it'll spend most of it's remaining life powering my 8th scale buggy over jumps at my track as I learn throttle control and get better lining myself up for jumps. To be competitive I naturally need more power on tap so I want to line up a motor to replace my current .21. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money but I know you get what you pay for. So what are your suggestions for a good second motor to put in an 8th scale buggy? I'm looking for good low end. The track I go to is relatively small, with many turns and jumps but only one smooth straight. I'm not looking for an OS or Picco necessarily, just something with more guts than my self port-polished Chinese rtr motor. A recommendation for a good pipe paired with a motor recommendation would be welcome. I'm looking to spend about 200 total for a motor and pipe. Needs to have a pull start as well. Not interested in bump start boxes at the moment. Thanks guys! :D
 
I agree with the Picco engines. I ran on my BB Revo and loved it.
 
200, preferably including a pipe in that budget. I'd likely stretch to 250 as long as a well paired pipe was in that budget as well. That is my absolute max right now.
 
If you're willing to step up to the JP series and you're wanting low end power, the JP-2 would be a better choice.
 
Do you mean the JP-1? According to the site, the JP-2 is tuned for top end. Looks good though. Just a hair over my bare bones budget and I feel comfortable that I'm not wasting money trying to buy "bleeding edge" equipment. Seems this hobby follows most others, cost vs performance is not a linear equation. The higher you go into the "exotic" stuff, the more you're paying for a diminishing return in performance. A 200 dollar motor will perform a bit shy of a 400 dollar motor but will save you 200 for a good tuned pipe and a nice set of mounted tires with some change left over, realistically giving you a better return for your investment. Naturally a kit with bleeding edge everything is going to perform better overall than something put together on a budget but I'm not looking for a grand investment when I've never even entered into a full race. I just want something that can compete with other budget builds, and maybe against a couple well put together mugens that are having bad days :D

Yes, sorry, forgot which was which. You're correct, JP1 is low & mid, JP-2 is mid & top end.

I should know that, being as I have a JP-2 on my truggy. lol.
 
Actually you were right, mid-top is going to be more useful to me since I'm not geared for top speed. Screw it ordering the pipe now. Maybe that'll delay my need for more motor
