hello everyone, got a savage xl from a buddy at good price. upon trying to run it i was fouling glow plug after glow plug. after 20 or so and trying to tune it i find out the motor is shot. it has an lrp .30 on it now and need one that is the equivalent or better. i was looking into the axial .32 or the picco .28. any suggestions on which engine would be the best. i would love to outrun my buddy with hi stock 5.9 and also ride a good wheelie. any suggestions would be very appreciated.

I'd take the Picco any day of the week. The .26 Maxx is a beast in my Revo.

or look at sts engines they have a good life. they have the low end to pull wheelies on command but also the high end to smoke your buddy. the only problem is that they don't reach thier max power very soon so you may think it's not a good engine at the start but it will reach its peak then its the WOW factor

STS engines are very hit and miss, I have had many. If you get a good one, they will scream! but that being said they have a major issue with the crank pin tearing off the crank, the materials aren't that strong and this is a well known issue. If you get a bad one, well it's just that, a bad engine. They aren't even in the same league as a picco engine.

This was one of the good ones.

That thing rips! Now lets see a video of a bad one. :hehe:

I can get an STS .28 for around 60pounds. But it doesn't come with the flywheel or clutch setup. Can I use the flywheel and clutch of my F4.6? Are these parts interchangeable? I think its about time for a change. My F4.6 was last years summer engine and I decided to use it through winter aswell. Now its not holding its tune very well and is quite slack in the sleeve. Fancy tryin something different.

Below is a link for the one I'm looking at.

Cheers guys.

For just a little more you could get an engine with a great name like the losi 454, SH P8, and a couple others that will run just as hard. It's your choice but it's a pretty big gamble for an engine known to have issues. Your stock clutch gear will fit most any big block engine.

everything will bolt onto a sts engine, it did for mine and i had the 4.1 that has the same clutch setup and flywheel

that is a steal for that price

i had the 30, it is a beast. fast, and durable. loved it cause it also had a nice sound

The one in the video was a .28, I don't believe it was adjusted like the .30 V2's which most ended up having ("WAY") too much pinch without the right taper causing break-in issues, major heat problems and broken cranks. Out of the 19 that I had, only 3 were pinched properly from factory. If you get a .30 that is very tight, 320F-340F temps are to be expected to make any power and it seems to be gallons before the pinch wears down or the crank pin gets torn off, which ever comes first.

The one on the left is a tight V2 .30, the middle one is a medium pinch V2, the one on the right is a medium pinch V1, it ran circles around the other two due to the others spending so much HP just pushing the piston through the pinch.

I don't hate STS but a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks.

Picco has the best track record for quality compared to the other brands talked about here, imo. I've seen too many Axials returned for similar reasons that Extreme RC Mods stated about the STS engines.

thank you everyone for your feedback. i think i have settles on a dynamite BIG RED. any feedback on it or tips for the motor. from what i've read its not to much power but just enough to hhave fun and bash. also, any reccomendations on fuel?

The Big Red should be ok for you. For fuel, well what's available at your lhs? Byron's,Blue Thunder Race,O'Donnell,Trinity,Torco, and Wildcat have all worked well for me. Torco was my favorite but it's not available locally.
