I'm new here, and i joined to help myself learn more with nitro cars in general

this is my revo 3.3 build. i picked up a parts pile + controller on ebay for 100 bucks today, and this is to help track the build, and ask any questions i may need answering as its probly missing things here and there, and i wont want to use certain stock parts anyways.

its in the mail right now, but i know a few things i need to buy already. like a exhaust manifold, a body, servos? hard to trust old used stuff.

ill be sure to post some pics as soon as it arrives.

so i got in my revo parts today, i still wish traxxas made kit versions, but they dont as far as i know, so this will have to do.

as for all the aluminum, well i didnt really have a choice. i got this for 100 bucks so i wasn't gonna sit there and argue. i think its a great deal. maybe not to some of you super seasoned vets, but I'm new and this seems ok to me.

armed with the exploded views from traxxas website, ill begin to put this together and get whatevers missing.

For the a-arms. Buy new plastic ones. Unless ur certain that those alloy ones are straight.
U may need to buy a new motor depending how used it is
New 2.4g radio and digital servos would be a good idea. Buy some hitec replacement, just get the sizes of the originals and match them with Some hi torque metal gear ones and ull never have a problem.
Look on dollarhobbyz for those basic parts u need otherwise rpm arms and replacements Are good, go trutrack rear if ur getting rpm arms

Ps. Only use one steering servo. Will be easier to setup and cause less problems in the future. The stock 2075 servo is fine and if u want get a 170+ oz torque servo for that and throttle

i do apreciate the tips. but for now I'm just trying to put it together correctly, and spend as little as possible doing so. after that ill get more into replacing the aluminum parts. rpm arms are almost a must. but for now it can wait untill it actually runs. the motor is ok, i duno how great, but it started with a used glowplug i had around. and its pretty cold here. think it was -8 when i got off work tonight. but all i did was idle it in the garage for 1/2 a tank for it to get in the 200 range from house temp in my stampede.

i kinda figured all the servos are no good. but thats just because they are not waterproof lol.

so i have all the metal parts soaking in lemon juice to get any rust or grease off. I've got a day or two before they will be ready. so i need to goto the hobby store and pick a few things up. i realize my pics arnt the greatest, but does anybody see any obvious missing parts? heres what i plan to pick up to start off

grease
locktite of some kind
ez start harness
5379X - blue rubber boot
5334R - lil plastic clip holds on blue rubber boot.
5317

I'm hoping that can get the suspention done and the trans mounted.

picked up a digital 2.4 radio and reciever off ebay, also got 2 2075 digi waterproof servos...

am i going to need one more for throttle? or can i use the 2075 as a single steering and a throttle one as well?

No conversion needed. Just pull one of the servos out and run a single high torque instead of two lower torque. I ran a single Futaba S3305 in my revo but as stated above a trx 2075 will do. They are about the same torque rating of 125 oz in. With a 5cell hump pack with around 1600 mah or better will power it just fine.

got the trans mounted, got all 4 hubs rebuilt with new bearings. far as i could go with the hobby shop closed on sundays and me spending half the day hurt up from #10 wings from wing coop.

ill take some pics later for you peps.

well the hoby shop had everything i needed besides the rubber booties & plastic clips. so maybe today, probly tomarrow. i did however pick up a new revo body, air filter, ezstart harness, turnbucles, grease, and locktite. i realize alot of that is stuff most of you have around. but I'm just starting, so grease and stuff is needed in my case, otherwise I'm sure cost would be down even more.

so i got a question for you guys and gals.

on the bottom front skid plate, the sterring bolts to it in the rear middle area of the plate. so traxxas shows a 5114 5x8 BB so I've got the aluminum crap, and I'm just not sure if i should have one or not... it seems like a very tight fit, is it a stock only thing? I've got maybe 1mm play in the steering area(were the big spring goes) so I'm thinking maybe i should buy the stock traxxas stuff and get the bearings.. I'm leaning towards the steering part being bad, rather than the skid plate.

I'm talking about that whole colum that goes right onto the front bulkhead. from the skidplate, its gotta be steering related. i just dont know the real name of the part sorry.

Is this a revo or a slayer? The arms almost look too short to be a revo and I see the slayer front/rear bumpers in the 'pile o parts' photo's.

The bolt goes through the rear piece of the front skid (5337), through a servo saver assembly (5344) and into a cross member (5343, the part I think your talking about). The second cross member in 5343 rests under the rear hinge pins of the arms and serves as brace and a mechanical servo stop (5344 stops when it hits little ears on it).

What are you not sure you should have? The bearing or the brace? Post up a photo of the parts in question, may make it easier to help. Most aftermarket stuff is a direct replacement for stock parts. Sometimes in a rare occasion, the aftermarket part is designed better or to replace other parts without needing some bits.

well it was sold to me as a revo. but they could have been wrong.... id rather it be a slayer anyways... but i thought id just play along with the revo since thats what they said it was.

FACEPALM!!!!! i can't belive it. but thanks for pointing it out to me, they are slayer arms..... gah!!!! i guess at least all my parts I've bought still work. and now i can take the body i got today back for a slayer body.... I'm new i didnt know! would totally make things easier if I'm looking at the slayer exploded views to build this then the revo then lol.

well for the time being, or untill a mod can move my thread to were it should be, ill just keep on going.

heres some more pics.

this is what i was thinking of getting to replace that chrome one i have, i am also missing the top most piece in the picture. course this was all before i knew it was a slayer and not a revo, but I'm guessing its the same part for both.

Yeah, the same for the most part. The slayer may run the one that allows for more steering as they include 2 when you buy that part #.

Differences are:
bumpers
body
arms
front/rear turnbuckles
axle sliders
trans 2 speed (wide ratio vs standard)

Shocks may have lighter springs on it, but I can't remember. My revo started life as a slayer. I bought it used as a slayer and it was fun for a while, but really tippy and couldn't handle big air without hitting the ground hard. I converted it to a 3.3 revo a while after getting it.

ok after all that new info and 4 hours building I'm off to relax. gonna pick it up again tomarrow. its a serious challange for me with internet instructions and 0 experience. but I'm learning alot.

after looking at the slayer diagrams, what ya know! the arms actually look like they should. and of course i had em all backwards and what not, but i got it all sorted out. now I've got another trip to the hobby shop planned for today before work to get a handfull of missing parts, and that black plastic piece(servo saver?) above.
