Well, I've had a MS filter for a few years and I've always liked how well it allows the engines to breath. 2 years ago, the cap came off the end of the filter and it cost me an OS 21RG. MS sent me a new cap that had longer legs so it wouldn't fall out. I installed it recently on a XTM 24.7 that has barely a gallon through it.
I noticed it was running weird today in my aftershock. I had just installed the engine to see how it did in the aftershock to see what kind of backup engine I had. It did ok, but didn't have as much off the line as the stock M26SS engine. But it ran good, so I left it in. I ran it yesterday at a MX track for about 45 minutes of run time, then I ran it today for about another 30 minutes before it started stalling. I couldn't figure out why. As soon as I'd take of the heater, it would run about 3 seconds, then stall. So, I installed a new GP. Then it seemed to clear up, for about 20 minutes... then it started stalling again. And I broke my pull-start.
So, I went home, pulled the engine, took off the air filter to get it out of the way so I could work on the PS... and I notice a nice pile of dirt inside the carb... and the exhaust port... the whole inside of the engine looks like I hit it with a wire brush. There's almost no pinch left... on an engine that has had no more than a gallon through it.
It might last a while, but my guess is it's pretty much dead. I've cleaned it, buffed the sleeve, rinsed the entire engine and bearings out.
I don't know what happened to the filter. It looks normal. Had oil on it. No more MS for me. Apparently they need more maintenance than I'm willing to do.
