Now that I'm getting closer to building my first electric buggy I've started going over some of the manuals to the gear. I picked up a Tekin RX8 system and I noticed a different configuration that I didn’t realize was an option. Apparently you have the option to wire the motor for forward only or forward and reverse. Coming from nitro, the three that I own have had the FOC treatment immediately. FOC to get rid of bucking in the tmaxx, and to eliminate the weak point of the revo tranny. So, I guess my question is, does it matter which way the motor is wired? If there is no downside to having reverse in an electric, why not? Is there any rules if you plan on tracking that you can’t have a reverse?

As far as I know there is no down side to having reverse in an electric, I believe it is removed for racing. It's not like a nitro where the reverse is in the transmission, the electric motor will just reverse rotation.

Is forward only required for racing?

Reverse is locked out for racing per rules. If you're bashing, reverse is okay. Removing the reverse is in the ESC programming.

I'm learing as I go.... Do I use the Tekin hotwire interface to block revease if wired for reverse, or is that just for fine tuning the RX8 motor?

The hot wire is for adjusting all of the settings in the ESC including reverse.

yeah, whether or not you have reverse is strictly an ESC setting....how the motor is wired on dictates which direction the motor spins but if your motor is spins the wrong way you can simply switch the direction setting in the ESC.
