So I have somethign in the works for by Base Camp, the Barbie Truck. - https://www.rctalk.com/forum/showcase/scx24-base-camp.263/

No spoilers, I'll post it when I am done.

But, that idea got me thinking of some other ideas to modify the body. I will be keeping it pink, but I have some other ideas for changes.

Got me thinking though. You see a lot of comp builds with no bodies. And you see a lot of new bodies made specifically for the SCX24s (and others, right now I only have the 24s). Of course, there are awesome ones by companies like Injora and Meus and others. And the 3D printed market is amazing. Then, of course, you have the creative people who have modified toy bodies and made them work.

But one think I haven't seen much of is keeping the factory body, but really modding it into something special.

Of course, now I am going down the rabbit trial with my Basecamp and JLU....

But, anyone got pics of some factory but heavily modded bodies?

I hit the Lobby of Hobbies yesterday and picked up some supplies. Will be getting to work on a few projects soon.

Maybe today?

I have some ideas in store for my SCX24 Basecamp for sure. Still kicking around some ideas for my JLU

So it looks like I won't be getting rich off of Etsy anytime soon, but I tried a thing.
I picked up some polystyrene and cement and attempted to make some rollbars/bed cover for my Basecamp.
I accomplished the overall look l was going for, but they're far from perfect.
I was trying to make these

I not super happy but for my first attempt, I'll take it.

Ideally I'd like the bars to be level with the top of the roof, and the side bars to be straight up, closervti the cab instead of the slight rearward angle and gap.
I'll probably end up trying to remake them
Right now they're just held on with two small pieces of duct tape under the bed cover

Here is what I used

Well. Yesterday was a total failure.

Tried painting spray painting part of the Basecamp

But. I have a new plan. Going to pivot. Was going for a pavement princess look

Unfortunately, this is what I got

Now I'm going to make it a beat up, well loved machine

I am going to swap out wheels and tires from my JLU to go with the look

When life gives you lemons, make a Sh!tbox

What kind of spray paint did you use?

Listen, I've watched just about EVERY Bob Ross episode there is at least 8 or 10 times now.
What you painted in black is 'the mountains in the background'.
Not a mistake, a happy accident!
You can work with that!

Bob could!!! 🙄🤣

Do you have any Phthalo Blue and Yellow Ochre??? 🤔

Wow, lots of comments

I used just generic spray paint from Walmart.
I was trying to be as budget as freindly as possible.
I used the same paint on the styrene rollbars I made.

Honestly, I know it's my fault for not doing any research.
I was a little frustrated at first becuase I have a lot of time invested in the body already, but, live and learn

My daughter also made the Bob Ross referene, lol

I might roll with it and go for the beat up look.
I might but a new body and start over.

My plan all along has been for a clean, "pretty" looking rig that looks like a pavement princess or mall crawler. The color scheme, the wheels and tires, everything has been selected up to that point. It doesn't even have any crazy mods, just the basics...wheels, tires, shocks, links, and some weight in the knuckles and diff covers and such

I love the beat up look, and I really want a rig like that. I was planning on going that route with my JLU, the Yeti.

I am going to pause on the Basecamp for a bit and seek clarity.

Currently I am still working on the one I am building from scratch, DIrty Dom
Them wheels came yesterday. I was working on getting those mounted. First time doing wheels and tires as my buddy did my other 2 for me.

I have been into these crawlers for like 15 months now, and really just started getting into working on them myself, - again my buddy, aka my mechanic, has done everything up to this point

When I finally decide what route to go with the Basecamp, I'll move forward.

I did throw some duck tape on the inside of it and got it held together an it is usable.

It looks like the tape that you used did not seal the edges well. The paint got under when you sprayed and this is the result.

Maybe I am incorrect but I think a more thorough tape job, maybe just using different tape might prevent this in the future.

The paint itself may have played a part too.
I have had a few bad times with junk spray paint messing up a job. 😐

I def recommend that you test on an old soda bottle or plastic container. You can experiment there and get your technique down before you start spraying bodies again.

Get a little more practice, you'll get the results you're after😎

I struggle with paint because I am not artisticly inclined... at all! 🤣
Its been a while now since I've painted anything but it seems that the best jobs I ever did were the ones that got the most prep first.

My daughter also made the Bob Ross referene,
Great minds think alike... 😉😁

This. Keep your tape in a ziplock bag. When the edge gets dirty its worthless because it will bleed.
