The long awaited fix for XP was released the 16th, I grabbed it from Microsoft.com and on the 17th it is nowhere to be found. Many other techs I know noticed this also. They have yet to re-post it. What the hell happened? It is installed on a few test workstations on my network as guinee pigs without a single problem so far (knock on wood). Question is why the hell did MS pull the SP2? Is there a SP2a to be released soon? Anyone know what the hell is happening? I didn't recieve and TechNet emails explaining anything either.

Here is the super secret URL, I bookmarked it for whatever reason but I cannot find on ANY of their pages where it links to this, have it if you want http://www.microsoft.com/sp2preview

i can't offer you any info as to why it was pulled. i dont even use XP. but a friend of mine has been using it for a few months now, and so far loves it. he's said its really a LOT more secure than the original.

I've been running XP2 for almost a week now and it's still available for download.

Service Pack 2 Download

Enjoy!

BTW preview is just that, preview software (aka beta) the link above it the final release. Though not recommended for home users because of the size, instead wait until the 25th with SP2 will be available for download from Windows Update. The link above is the network install (266MB).

Thats the same link I posted and not inteneded for the general public. Where did the link go from microsoft.com-->Updates?

They did do a final release (supposedly final) the 16th, I saw it with my own eyes then they pulled it.

WoodiE for such a computer guy you are being a flipin dork bro click my link, then click the link where it says "get the service pack" that takes you to your link. Come on guy! Kick the ball back to me. I am saying they had the release FOR THE PUBLIC ON THE 16th THEN THEY PULLED IT, all that remains is the 266mb Network install that you and I BOTH linked too.

Naww I just clicked your link and noticed it was different, I didn't spend the time to read the whole page - my bad.

However as I've said the only release is the network install the home user won't be able to download it until the 25, I've seen nothing of the sort regarding this "16th" date.

Several people on TechIMO also mentioned that SP2 was due for release on the 16th.

http://www.techimo.com/forum/t117141.html The 11th post down mentions this. Of course I have no idea where he got that timeline from.

I downloaded and installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers and I have not had any issues. I hate using Windows Update. I really wish they would give me the option to download all of the files instead of using that automatic update crap. A lot of computer I work on are still connected to the Internet via dialup. My Uncles PC connects at 28.8 speeds on a good day. :-/ If I know I am going to be working on a machine that had a crappy dialup I will make a point of grabbing the machine and bring it back to my place so I can use my broadband connection.

You can D/L all the updates and burn them to a disc, I have done it just for the reason you are talking about (dial-up) users.

As already mentioned I have downloaded the network version of SP2 and have already slipped streamed SP2 with my XP Pro cd and have done two clean installs with that CD on two different computers just fine.

All speculation aside I acutally saw the SP2 download and I downloaded it from the public section of www.microsoft.com when you click the link "Downloads". It was one of the top 10 downloads on the side. On the 17th I looked in the same spot and poof-be-gone, it was no longer there. Does that make sense?

You can? Either the option is burried or I am blind. How do you know what order to install the patches? Or does it not matter?

Mcvickj

I have never had an order problem but I guess I never installed them all at once from an never before updated PC. And it is pretty burried, I will look and link it to you.

WoodiE

I would say around 8-9am Best Coast time. My brother saw it also (4 yrs my senior and also an I.T. Manager). So I do know I wasn't taking crazy pills.

Mcvickj - Yes it is buried and if I'm not mistaken it's buried somewhere within the Windows Catalog of all places. Another down side of downloading all the updates is that they labeled by their knowledge base number so when you have about 2-3 dozen KB#'s it's next to impossible to know which does what.

I'd recommend slip streaming SP2 with a XP CD so when you do clean installs on the computers it will have SP2 already installed.

HB - Ok, I was just making sure it wasn't around the 4:20 time.

I downloaded SP2 about 2 weeks ago for XP Home. It's supposed to repair several critical security issues. I just got my XP computer running again, after being down for over 2 months, so I went to the MS site, and there it was. It's unbelievable that XP was released when it was, then had endless patches for security issues, and it's still going on.
Service Packet 1, when installed in XP Pro, caused other serious issues within the system.

i just got mine down loaded.when i got home tonite windows update was on so i down loaded it.It took almost an hour to down load.

Is there a reason why I should wait for the 25th? Let me know what the big diff is for a home desktop using XP Pro?

Just thought I would post this for HB. It looks like they did release it during the week of the 16th.

"The first computer owners to get Windows XP Service Pack 2 began receiving it on Wednesday night, Microsoft said. The update is being sent to people who have the automatic update feature turned on in the operating system. But it will take at least a few weeks to deliver the 80-plus megabyte patch to the installed user base, a company representative said on Thursday."
