Mem effect on NiCad Batts

Hi,

My 8.4v batts that I use for my starter box has gotten the "Memory Effect", I was stupid and charged the batteries without discharging them.

Is there anyway I can remove the memory effect of the batteries or do I have to go out and buy some more?

I may be wrong (please correct me if so) but I think you will need to cycle them (I.E discharge and charge) a few times 3 or 4 to get them back in shape.

I agree. You need to discharge them fully. Try that and measure each till its nil. Then fully recharge them with a peak detection charger.

this is where a homemade lightbulb discharger comes into play. hook the batts up to that when they dump and wait till the bulbs all go out. then peak charge, put back in the starter box and use till they dump, repeat the bulb procedure. kind of a rough way to go about it, but most nitro guys dont have the equipment to properly cycle a battery. if possible discharge the batteries at a rate equal to what you use them normally. i sometimes dead short my batts once they are all but fully drained, but its not really the best for them, although it ensures your charging a battery from absolute zero.

If any of your RC buddys have a good charger that discharges as well, they can make short work of this. Try asking your hobby shop.

i have a mega 3 that discharges.. but I've heard that you should only go so far when discharging multi cell batterys.. what voltage should i stop at??

i alo "made" a discharge bulb set.. out of two headlight bulbs for a chevy.. left them mounted in the holder they come in and just wired them in series.. then run the wire out the back and put a plug on it..

cheers guys, I've got a cheap Trinity discharger that I've tried, but only tried it once.

I'll charge and discharge them a couple of times and see what happens

Haven't had much luck with the nicads after they develop a memory. Just tried it with a couple of the radios though. Think they were shot anyway.
