If the reason for being modular just is to be possible to tug it away, you could consider using a carpet instead:
 
That is a good idea. It would also store easily because it can be rolled up. I currently have mine disassembled and stacked in a corner. One thing about using the hot glue is there would be really no way to change the layout. (unless there is?)

No there is no way to change the layout, this is in fact my second carpet as the first I made had a bad layout, that's why I in the video tested the layout before I started to glue.
