First off I dont want to end up dumping $1000 into this buggy. Lets say my budget is 500-750 for everything.

I am looking for a kit so I can learn how these things function and put together. I do not plan at this time to actually go out and race it, more like bash around and take it to the track on occasions.

Honestly can I build a kit on this small of a budget?

Thanks

TW

edit: and please I am open to suggestions and any opinions!

Most kits start around mid 500's. Plus electronics which will run about 150. Decent servos are about 50 each. The engine will cost anywhere from 175 and up. If you want to go non pull, you need a starter box. Not all kits come with tires, just rims. .... I don't think you can get a decent kit for your budget. I'M SURE IT'S POSSIBLE if you shop smart and do some cutting of your corners but then it'll be only "good enough" and not what you really want out of a kit. When I built my kit, I spent a total of 800 but that was only because I had the electronics already. I only had to spend for a starter box.

Your budget will basically get you a decent RTR.

You could get an XB8 for $580 (what I paid for mine)
An OS RG for 100
a POS AM radio for 20 bucks on ebay
$40 for a tuned pipe
$30 for an OK steering servo
$40 for tires
...and you'll still need fuel/ignitor/etc...

Thats about the cheapest you could go, unless you want to get a crappy kit to begin with.

With that budget I would suggest getting a nice RTR buggy. Like a Jammin of a Mayhem or a Hyper 7.

Well I had an Inferno back in 1994 and I started diggin through some things and I found my old started box and Futaba magnum jr radio. I dont know if this will help my cause or not.

I alreayd have a Revo so I have some misc things already laying around. I might just say screw it and just piece it together as I can.

That is a great deal, go for it, you won't be dissapointed. Since you have a radio already, you can spend some more dough on good servos and a motor w/ starterbox. Pullstarts suck.

TW,
If you're looking to get into 1/8 scale racing I have a rig ready to race for sale here:
https://www.rcnitrotalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37972
it's in excellent condition and you wouldn't come close to setting this up for less than 650......the servos are practically brand new the engine IS....and the rest of the buggy is like new too (look at the pic of the chassis, almost no scratches)....

Plaidfish thanks. I think I really want to build a kit so I know how these beasts function. It looks like a smoking deal, I will keep it in mind for sure!

OS RG.21. And get mid price servos like the Hitec 945MG, Rx batt pack, (about 15-20.00) a Rx to match your Tx, and you are set. The TQ kit has all the other stuff you need like tires, clutch bell and flywheel, manifold, pipe. Later you can upgrade it with all the "Pro" parts.

I know your looking to get a kit but hear me out. I looked for a buggy and bought an OFNA LX COMP. It was nice for about two months and then I went to the track. I then bought a used MBX5 upgraded to pro spec, starter box, 8 sets of tires and wheels, a huge amount of parts. And two additional engines. Well the two engines were bad and told the seller and he reimbursed me $100.00 and I sent those back. I then used the omega picco 21 xt comp engine that it came with. I then sold 5 sets of tires on ebay. It cost me $560.00 for all of this, minus the 100 for the engines and 100 for the tires sold. It cost me a total of $360.00. I sold my Ofna and tore down the Mugen and rebuilt it like a kit. I bought servos and tranmitter for 120.00. My point here is it's worth shopping for used on ebay to get an awesome ride then to settle for something you might sell in 4 months. That's just my :2cents:

thanks Scott for your advice, I willing to hear any and all opinions. You got a great freakin deal!

Good thing is that I have time and not in a hurry so I can make a wise decision.

Good move on taking your time and just remember if you don't like your purchase, it's easier to sell a high end ride than it is to sell something in between. I took a hit on my LX COMP. I could only get $180.00 and that had a picco .26 on it. Good luck on your purchase and let us know what you end up with and provide some pics because it excites the natives.

Here is a full list of parts to get a Hyper TQ kit up and running (it can be done cheaper, it can be done more expensive). Its a list I wrote that has some quality components, that you won't need to upgrade much in the future. The only thing not on there would be a set of alloy front and rear chassis braces which I would suggest as well.

This does come in around $1000.00 so you may have to trim it a bit to hit your mark.

- Hyper 7 TQ Sport = 240.00 at ace (car is so upgradable, and so much parts availability, you can upgrade to pro kit off of e-bay as needed)

-JR XS3 Radio = 150.00 ebay (It is the cheapest synthesized radio around. This means you never have a channel conflict again. Also comes with decent servos to get you going, range seems good and its computerized).

-OS RG (p) = 110.00 or 90.00 at tower when they do the $20.00 coupon (great engine, at half the price of engines with similar power)

-Jammin JP-1 or 2 exhaust= 45-60 ebay depending on coating (good pipe for the RG)

-OFNA Chrome top starter box #10250 = 80.00 ebay (12 volt motor, room for a dry cell, and has hookups to run a glow starter off of the dry cell)

-Dubro Pit Caddy = 30.00 (comes with 850 cc fuel bottle, jetting screwdriver, glow plug wrench, engine stopper)

-Byrons 30% race fuel 28.00/gallon @ any hobby store (I have tried Blue Thunder, and Odonnel, and found the best results with this fuel for the above engine).

-OS 8 (or A8, I forget) plugs = 5.00 anywhere (I bought tons of these, because I used to go through McCoy MC-8s alot. I have had this same single plug in the engine for months without fouling!!)

-Mugen Aluminum clutch shoes 16.99 ebay (great hook up, long life)

-Mugen 1.0 springs 3.99 ebay

-Ofna clutch bell 15.00 most hobby stores

-12 volt 7ah battery = 20.00 (for starter box)

-Venom 2400mah NIMH AA batteries (8) 20.00 at tower (for transmitter instead of alkalines, highest mah rating out right now it seems, and one of the cheapest)

-OFNA 6 volt receiver pack 9.00 ebay (don't mess with AA's for your receiver, this will only lead to a low voltage condition and a runaway)

- MRC 977 Super Brain 99.00 on ebay (plug in peak charger that charges 2 batteries at once, can charge/discharge almost ANY battery type used with nitro cars, including 12 volt starter box batteries).

-OFNA PCR temp. gauge 33.00 on ebay (fits in top of engine, so you don't have to worry about lining it up, easy to read display)

-OFNA micro failsafe 17.00 on ebay (Keep your car from going out of control, with loss of reception)
