Anyone know of any linear springs, or spring kits that work with Ultra Shocks? Heard that linear would be more predictable and more consistent rather than progressive.

(I kinda new this but never got into looking and comparing them closely) 2ndly, the big bores arent big bore. Smaller diameter springs and shorter springs as well. Tried to fit big bore red springs in ultra shocks, don't work bc they can't get above the lower cap. Also the lower and upper spring cups are different sizes hence the different sized springs.
Trying to race on a budget but I'm hoping I can convert both of my 2WD trucks to GTRs at some point.

Left is ultra spring. Right is big bore spring.

Big bore shocks from Traxxas, that aren't really big bore and are a absolute pain to rebuild
I have a spare set of them, got another rebuild kit. I just can't figure out how to put this stupid snap ring back on. I got pliers for it but the ring is too small for the pliers. And here's the funny thing, Traxxas doesn't sell a tool for them 🤣

Traxxas big bore shocks are big bore only in name now, as when they were introduced originally they were a big bore shock body, and a substantial upgrade.

The big bore shocks are aluminum ultra shocks now essentially.

If you want true big bore shocks, look at Traxxas GTR shocks or other aftermarket shocks.

I had a full set of 8 big bore shocks on my
E-Maxx brushless, and they were okay for what they were. Just not enough tuning options for my liking, so I tinkered together some aluminum shock towers and put 4 Notorious 6s Front shocks on and it’s been so much better.

Just bumped up against this myself. Thinking I was upgrading my old Ruster ST with 'big bore' shocks. Same shocks size-wise near as I can tell. Only difference being the "big bore" springs will not back-fit my legacy shocks. Guess plus-up is getting a progressive spring? Been wanting to try those for my backyard grass track application. So, while I'm a bit disappointed with having to buy a shock I basically already had, being able to fit the "big bore" springs and having a selection of same kinda-sorta offsets it.

Only bought a pair of fronts. Waiting out now on buying a pair for the rear. Dunno. Not being deeply immersed in next gen Traxxas technology and product offers, guess the onus is on the buyer? My bad. -AC

I've never owned any of the big bores but i have owned a few trucks Ultra shocks. Nowadays i have a Slash 4x4 Ultimate with GTR's on it and they're nice shocks i even had them on my old Hoss also have smaller Revo\Jato ones on my XO-1. I love the GTR's especially the aluminum bodied ones not the plastic ones that are both the 2WD nitro Jato and the Electric Jato 4x4.

I just don't understand why Traxxas decided to put a ring to hold all the seals in. Like almost every other shock out there uses a threaded cap... 🤦 even stock ultra shocks do.
Internal c-clips, to hold in the lower shock seal components, have been used since the early "good ol' days" of RC. The big bore shocks were some of the best shocks... at least back in 1995 they were. I used tweezers for the c-clip, but...

It's weird that the same pistons are used in both the big bore and ultra shock bodies. I guess the ultra shock bodies have a thicker composite. Yes/no?
