I just finished reading the rules involved at a track that has 1/8th buggy classes that is one of 4 that is within 180 miles of me, and I read something that I thought was odd.
They said in equipment rules:
Any radios operating more than two channels are not allowed(Except for in the Monster Truck Classes). More than one function is allowed per device, but a servo is limited to one output shaft. Reverse in competition is not allowed.

I am reading this as, "if you have 2 servos, each with 1 output shaft, then you are legal"

Is this correct? Or is my 3 channel Airtronics MX-3 that I just purchased illegal?
They say "operating more than 2 channels", so I should be OK operating only 2 channels, right?

A reversing transmission is what I'm assuming they are referring to as the third channel?

Sorry to ask such an ignorant question.

My guess is you should be just fine. You might want to call them and ask them to make sure. If they didn't allow three channel radios to be used, then that alienates pretty much all the higher end radios (M8, M11, JRXR3, Futaba and Hitec), as they are all three (or more channels, the m11 is 4 channel) channels.

I personally cannot see how a person, much less WHY a person, would want to run more than 2 channels on a buggy at any given time. Sounds like an overstatement of the rules to me.

Basically they are saying you can only use 2 channels of your radio, one for throttle, one for brake. Technically you could use a 8 channel radio, as long as you only have 2 of them operational.

You will be fine with your airtronics.

Would it not be 1 channel for throttle/brake and 1 channel for steering r/l?

The alienation factor is mostly why I thought those rules were odd.
I can't imagine a higher end Tx only having 2 channels..but like I said before, I'm still a noob.

You are right one for t/b one for steering. With a monster truck you might have reverse which uses one extra channel on your radio, but with a buggy there is no need for the third channel.

Cool, I think i'm totally in the clear with their rules thus far,,as they have no rules about having to be good at racing :)

I'm not too sure what you will be running (i think mach .28) but most tracks will allow you to run with a larger engine if it came rtr that way. So you might want to bring proof that the buggy came the way it did. If I'm refrencing the wrong person I'm sorry. Its late and I should be in bed.

Thanks Guys, I still have the box it came in with the Mach 28 engine and says 28Mach edition sticker, and I'll carry it with me. Nice to know that I may need it.
I don't plan on being competitive, I'd be an idiot to think that I could compete, I just want to start learning to race and not get in anyone's path, until I NEED that "path" ;)

I really appreciate all the information you guys are giving me.

Thanks

Operative word is, "Operates". If you cannot or choose to not operate a third a channel, then you comply.

8 channels would be awesome, t/b and st are a given...but then you could have one for an oil slick, blades that come out of the wheels to destroy competitors tires, a large spike (ala robot wars) that bashes down on another racers rides killing their engines, small rocket grenades that blow up cars in front of you, an emf transmitter that interferes with everyones ride but yours, and lastly a little middle finger graphic that you can pop up as you cross the finish line first.

Jeep, get on it man, start modding!!!

LMAO Bro,
Would you believe I've already thought about an arm that lays across the top of the buggy that can pivot via solenoid such that the buggy can "right" itself when it ends up upside down. :)
