One of the first things I ordered after the HBX16889 brushless (not pro) basher was a set of oil shocks as an "essential upgrade" to the stock friction ones.
Took a while for them to arrive (the first set still hasn't so ordered some more which have) and fitted them today. They're about the cheapest you can get from AliExpress but pretty impressed with the quality for the price.

The problem is that the truck is so light that the springs are just way too strong and it still bounces. From what I can tell the "upgraded" shock springs are about as light as you can get at a measured 2lbs/inch. This doesn't allow any suspension sag at all just like the stock shocks, although the springs on those are even lighter.
Net result is that the driving characteristics aren't really any different and it's still pretty bouncy, although the damping would undoubtedly be useful for jumps. None of the YouTube videos has mentioned this (and I think I've seen them all lol) which makes me wonder how many of these 'experts' have an actual understanding of how suspension works.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this little truck's agility, lightness, speed and build quality for such a small price. I just wished I could rely on information which isn't all about selling "upgraded" parts with little to no benefit.

If anyone knows of lighter springs which are 50x13mm and don't cost the earth I'd be very interested.

a lot of those guys are paid advertisements. i do it on amazon reviews for grow lights. company A has me buy the light on Amazon, then when i post a positive review on it you the next customermsee that I'm a verified purchase. they refund my money and i keep the product. if i write an actual review and say hell no this light is garbo and totally not worth the cash, well then company A and comp[any B both stop sending me free lights, which i use or give to friends that want to get into that hobby.

It's hard to trust any reviews on the tube or amazon, is why i come here, all of us will give you HONESTY as we get nothing for lying or misleading you, in fact if i were to try to mislead you and influence you to buy light A, ill get reamed publicly with everyone who HAS used that light informing you that I'm full of doodie. dont trust online reviews,

That's the thing though. I'm aware of all the shill advertising on there and can spot it easily. It's absolutely rife in the airgun world which is my main hobby. Some of the videos are by what appear to be genuine enthusiasts who aren't trying to sell something. Maybe I was just unlucky with the shocks I bought but I really can't see any others having lighter springs. I guess the problem is that at this cheaper end of the scale people aren't really bothered about performance, but just because something is cheap doesn't mean it can't be good. If nothing else I've learned a lot about RC suspension and it's only cost me £5!

Nice! I fell victim to it myself
Hey my favorite youtuber suggested this so it must be good lolz we're had at my expense lol

Are your springs too strong or is your shock oil too light. You said the truck is still bouncy. Obviously I can't see it from here but if your oil is too light, your buggy is still gonna bounce when you're done.
The springs are going to change your ride height and rebound. The dampers limit that rebound.
I hope i'm being clear as I tried to explain this once before and failed miserably. 😆

The inside diameter of springs is 13mm? Yeah, it sucks trying to find springs to accomplish something that's not OEM. I just went through it trying to find springs that fit 13mm bore shocks. A lot of times there is only lengths and rates from manufacturer to go by. Hopefully someone with smaller scale RCs will chime in and measure what they got.

Anyone with Associated's Reflex14T/B platform?

Well I got fed up with looking at overpriced springs where they don't even tell you the rate so I made my own!

Ride height is now in the middle of the travel even without preload adjustment. The wire isn't proper spring steel but the car is so light it doesn't really need anything more

I'm in the UK and all the listings don't have any information. I found some on a specialist hobby site which had rates stated but even the lowest was ½lb heavier than the one's I've got.
If these don't last I'll probably just get some piano wire and make some more. It's so easy really

I see. I'm in US so there's that. I could suggest that my kyosho optima mid spring that i'm working on right now have ans inner adjust collar of 12mm. I'm guessing these springs would work.
I believe a set of 3 in very soft, soft , medium and a set of soft, med, hard were avail.
Associated RC10 is DEEP in racing. There should be just about any weight you desire.
If your home spun springs are working for you and they perform well, keep them as is and job well done!

Great job, and you got room to work with.

Tried it out yesterday on the lawn and the handling is much better with no bouncing around. Need to try on some loose gravel next but the weather here is awful at the moment

Its a nice looking chassis!
I have a DeeRC200e that had the dame problem.
I replaced shocks, springs and all with Arrma 6s and some creative spring work.
They turned out great!
The car fell apart though so now I have a nice set of shocks/springs to drop in something!
I hope the weather lets up for you!
I'm interested to know if your springs perform to your liking now!
👍🏻
