Thinking about investing in one of these guys in the future. Who has them and what is the best way to choose one. I have a HD player but not cable. I am fine with that. The PS3 is going to be it for sometime.

I am told that 1080P is the best and the PS3 is said to be able to utilize it but I have seen the contrast numbers differ from manuf/model to the next. What is best?

I am hoping to get a 40+ or more. Gearing to get a 47". I also want to hang it on the wall using some mount that allows it to pivot and pan.

Help???

Thanks guys

Jon

My Advice:

Sony...break out your wallet.....remodel a room.....;)

I am looking as well.....man lots of choices.....good luck..

About the best thing that can be advised; read the thread about HDTV's, found here;

https://www.rcnitrotalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50874

Granted, LCD's are not exactly the same as a CRT-based Hi-def, but it's still the same general advice; just go out and winder shop! Once you find one that fits your eyes (as the picture will look different to everyone), then go from there. Also, do some research on which brands to avoid (Emerson, as well as brands you've never heard of, for example).

All that bein said, once you find your TV that you like, then research into brackets and what-not. Generally, you'll need the weight of the TV, so you'll know that the bracket can actually hold it securely. From there, figure out your cable routing (nothing is quite as unsightly as seeing a ton of cables running down the wall).

I will echo Talon's opinion of Sony, tho. Very sharp picture for the money and generally very high quality. Also, Samsung is a great one. I've got an LCD flat panel on my PC, and wow. Sharp, clear picture with little-to-no artifacting (caused by a slow draw-rate).

I'm about to lay down the cash for a 42" vizio - yeah I understand they don't carry the name like Sony or Sharp but every review I've read has been positive, every display model in every store that carries them shows an awesome display. For many hundreds less then the Sony or Sharp name.

42" Vizio 1080 LCD tv from sears is $1,099 - use their credit card and decline the special interest rate and get an additional $150.00 off. $950 for a 42" 1080 LCD TV is one hell of a deal!

Just my :2cents:

Thanks Chief. That is what I have heard about them. I have also seen them at Wal-mart specials but From them... I kind of worry about the life span. I have though seen 3 of my neighbors get a 42" in the last two months...

I have heard good things about the Vizios as well....I just figure that if I am going to drop cash on a TV that should last 5 to ten years........I want a solid brand name and like the Peyton Manning commercials for Sony state so well......they practically invented the medium....and when you look at a Visio right next to a Sony......you can tell the difference....now when you take it home nobody cares or has to know,.....but you will..;)

I may end with a Vizio as well, if my wife has anything to do with it......I can hear her now....well for that money we could save the world from starvation or some poop like that... ;)

If she starts up with that line, all ya gotta do is put on the Womens Entertainment or Oxygen channel.... Even Lifetime Movies would do the trick.

Good luck peelin her away from the TV after that. Well, unless you're really good at reasoning, then you can get his and hers sets. ;)

Jon,

Vizio is sold in about 2-3 other stores as well, however the 42" 1080 LCD TV's are only sold in Sears and Circuit City. Wal-mart and Sams carry the 42" 720 LCD's.

Just last week I was reading an article online about extended warranties and how they usually are a waste of money, more so for LCD TV's in general due to less then 1-2% fail or have problems. With that said if you are truly worried about the life of a Vizio, they do offer extended warranties though the same company Best Buy sells warranty for a decent price - that is if you are really worried about it.

With that said, I myself do plan on getting a Vizio - I've been very pleased with what I've seen so far on reviews and displays and price. I don't watch much TV so I don't see the need spending $2k-3k on something that I'm only going to use on Sundays ;) I do agree with HeartBreak, if you're looking to buy a TV then go look at the TV's yourself - what looks good to me may not look so hot to you.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what to look into as well... I need something that can handle extreme usage and not totally break the bank that's at least 60 inches... I laugh at a 2000 hour bulb life... We would chew that up in 7 months. So, that would average out at $500+ a year in bulbs.

I'll start my own thread when the time comes. It's aggravating to see how many variations of HD stuff is out there. What the number mean... contrast ratios, lumen's, progressive scan, 1080p, 1080i... all very annoying. I JUST WANT TO WATCH TV!!!

Hey Jon,

I have a 45 inch Sharp Aquos LCD TV. I love it. I shopped around, alot. All the TV's that I looked at looked fabuolous in the store. That is the kicker... most stores pump in a picture from an HD player and not necessarially an HD picture via Satalite or Cable. In my opinion it may showcase what the TV is capbable of when viewing a DVD, but how is it going to perform with input from a Satalite or Cable signal that may not be Hi-Def. What sold me on the Aquos was actually seeing the TV at my Brother in laws hooked up to his HD cable. Seeing how the TV performed via input from a Cable box sealed the deal for me. The other thing you may want to look at is how the TV looks while watching a live action sporting event. Progressive Scan and Interlaced TV's will perform differently. In fact I am still learning about how each is different. My TV is a progressive scan unit and it looks great. Of course that is just my opinion. Another aspect to look at is distance away you will be sitting from your TV. The bigger the TV the farther away you need to sit to be in the "optimal viewing distance". This does matter. If you get a big TV and you are sitting to close your picture will be fuzzy and seem blurry. So you may want to see what the optimal viewing distance is for a TV before you buy. My sister and her husband bought a 76" DLP TV and man is that thing hard to focus on up close. You can see the damn thing across the street! LOL

Now the wall mount I got for my TV allows it to pivot and pan and it was about a hundred bucks... the price will depend on the size of TV you get. Most of the ones you will see will be universal and work with just about any flat panel TV. The only thing you need to make sure of is that when you mount it.. you find studs.

Oh yeah... the PS3 is capable of 1080i and it looks great, although not all the games are in 1080i some are in 720p, which still looks great. I love being able to play the PS3 on a TV hanging on the wall! LOL

Sorry for the long read.. but I just bought one and have done alot of reading and shopping around. I can take pictures of my setup if you want. If you have any questions I will be happy to help any way I can.

Take care my friend.

Tom

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is super confused about all this..

So far I am planing on getting a 40" Samsung LNT4065F.

I have been reading great reviews on many sites ,watching videos about it and
Looked for it in stores.(All the Samsung displays I have seen look Great!)

I seen one in best buy, It was a LNT4066 and thats supposed to be the same display with different frame and buttons, and It looked amazing!

There was little to no blur on even the fastest moving objects and it had a great crystal clear picture.
And just for the record I plan on buying this TV from amazon.
The price is constantly moving around to any where as low as $1,399, and free shipping!

i personally have a 42" rear projection LCD from sony. love it!!

my next TV will be a sharp aquos, for sure.

i also have a PS3... a lot of games are being released in 720p. if you want to to future proof your A/V system... go for the 1080p, but it's not paramount. anyway, you're in for a treat. HD all the way!! GL with it all.

I have been looking at getting a new tv for some time, but I have decided that having a slim tv doesn't matter, so I'm going to dlp. Anyway, from what I have seen both LCD and Plasma wise, the top two are Samsung and Sony. Both are quite expensive, but both have AWESOME picture quality. Another thing to look for is the number of inputs.

The LCD's of Sonys I've seen so far have been unimpressive IMO. I find them to have a course looking picture and flat colours.

Hey Neobart,

what type of AC do you run? 110 or 220? Just curious.

Keep an eye out for the newer ones that are driven by an LED Light engine vs a typical arc lamp. Much longer life. Supposed to have better blacks as well. 20K+ hour life. $500 replacement for light engine. (or so I've read)

Unless something else comes out in the next year or two, I'll probably go this route as well. I don't feel like shelling out 10K for a 60" plasma or LCD... Anything smaller would stink for us.

I bought an LG 37" LCD today at Best Buy for $839.00, it was actually higher but Circuit City had them at $839.00 so BB matched the price. I bought the 4 year extended warranty for an extra $129.00, I like the fact that they service the tv in my home and it covers everything except me dropping it or hitting it with something....Including a power surge! It's not on the wall but it mounted on a stand that swivels and has two lower glass shelves. Honestly after reading a lot of reviews and opinions I was looking for a Sony or a Sharp. The LG was set up next to a Sony and the picture on the LG blew the Sony away! I compared it to the sharp and price became the deciding factor, after all I am still on cable.

Olds every LCD I looked at now comes with the better 20k bulbs.

Let me just say that if you are going from a regular tube tv to LCD or Plasma you will be blown away at the difference but don't let that fool you into the discount prices, buy a good one. I actually bought an RCA 32" LCD last week, it was cheap and looked pretty good in the store but after getting it home it was a let down so back to Wal-Mart it went, this new one is killer!
