I got cheap last year and decided to save the $30 and not seed the lawn. Well, that taken into account with 3 dogs, my lazy a$$ not raking leaves, and well, just my lasy a$$ = bare spots in the back yard with no grass growing (mud). This isn't good if you're planning on selling your house!

2 days ago I bought grass seed and straw.

My questions are:
Is it possible to over-seed a lawn?
What do you all do throughout the year to keep your lawns looking good?

i hope u got that short fuzzy/soft grass. i want to come walk on your lawn barefoot.:arrr: :arrr: :arrr:

Dead spots could mean grubs too, i just bought my house 1 1/2yrs ago and really only started lawn work 10 months ago, i use scotts seeds (i dont think you can really over seed its just that some seeds catch and some dont as well i guess and you waste some of your money by putting down more than recommended) grubex works good to get rid of grubs, scotts premium sun/shade mix (depending on your location if you go to the scotts website it can help you out. (holy run on sentence batman sorry guys) i try to mow my lawn once a week and keep it about 2.5-3 in high, to first establish the seedlings water it frequently and do not let any traffic on those areas for 10-14 days, and you can't put down fertilizer within 6 weeks of seeding. I am by no means perfect at it but all my neighbors who have lived on my street forever told me they dont remember the last time the grass has been so green. Oh yea also give the grass a real good rake job. I use a garden weasel to (I guess) kinda tiller the lawn so the seeds take and its harder for the birds to eat. once again sorry about the long posts hope it helps you out some how.

You can never over seed a lawn. One thing to keep in mind. Just a few minutes in the sn with no water.. and the seeds are cooked. They will never germinate.

Best bet poke holes all over the damned bare spot with eithe ra screw drive, or a big logng teak, fill em with seeds and cover gently, if you keep it watered these will make big "tufts" of grass and provid a good solid root base for the loose seeds.

Keep it covered and keep it wet you shouldn't have any problems..

Have you seen the "lawn patch" bags of seed? they have the green fluffy stuff that holds water and voers the seed. Well its just mushded up newspaper with seed mixed in dyed green. Anythign you can mix he seed with that will hold water works awesome.

I mixed a bag of seed with a bag of wood pellets (for a pellet stove) they puffed up and made a nice cover that held water welll.

Thanks for the help guys, I do appreciate it. Poke lots of holes and keep em wet....I mean for the yard you sick bastards:hehe: .

The more seeds u put down the better. Use Scott's fertilizer through out the year. If u go to ur local Sears hardware or Lowes you'll see that Scott's has fertilizer treatment for different months of the year. Follow that and u should be fine.

that bag o lawn stuff the fluffy stuff...i had no luck what so every with it. The grass came up nice and green and then (while taking care of it) it turned brown and died..only in the sections i used that stuff in. so IMO its garbage...the tried and true method of poking holes or churning the soil planting seeds w/hay or mulch over the top works much better.

The best thing for new seeding is watering EVERY day and put a good starter fertilizer on it. I like water in the evenings that way it's got all night to soak in. I've done my fair share of seeding. This works for me. Good luck.
