I have a Compaq 2010US laptop, I'm having troble with the cooling. the fan runs for like 5 seconds every5 mins. is there a way to turn on the fan so it always runs when its on? or did mine come with a leg/desk warmer option?
thanks-matt

laptops are bad for overheating.. look in the bios for on/off temps or always on settings.. or get a laptop cooler thnig

Do what I did get an old tv tray and take the top off it and set the laptop on it!...
Works great

go to download.com and search for "speed fan" it lets you change those settings supposedly, but I never noticed much of a difference in mine. I also use the targus USB chill-matt for my laptop. And, as beason said, try the bios settings.

It's nothing to worry about. Laptops do that. they are so confined to their airspace that they heat up quickly. The majority of that heat comes from the processor. The fan you're hearing is the processor cooling fan.

It blows enough to get it down to a certain temperature, and then shuts off to conserve energy/battery.

If you don't want it getting hot, targus makes a "laptop mat" that helps cool it off.

I use the Targus "Chill Pad" for my laptop. It works pretty well. Also keeps the heat off the family jewels ... ;) Compusa has it for about$30

One of the worst things for laptops is laying them on the carpet when its on. (Not saying ya do) but it picks up lint and chit. But yeah, them Chill pads work sweet. I had the same one on my old laptop at the shop. Mine would get hotter than hell just sitting on my desk.

Man, the matt in that pic is old-school...lol. Mine just has 2 fans.... :( I wouldn't mind one fan just as long it was under the cpu cooling vents, but of course it's not, but overall, it still works well. It says it sucks the warm air under the laptop out, and shoots it out the back. Which I can admit because if you put your hands over the fans, you don't feel any air, and all the air, you feel coming out the back.
One reason I got mine was I'm usually laying down while using it, one of the worst things HP claims you can do w/ a "notebook." LOL, I call them about it one day, and they're like "well sir, your laptop is a 'notebook' and you usually use notebooks on desks and other flat surfaces, so that's where your computer is supposed to go..." I'm like, "Hmmm....that's odd....last time I was writing a school report on my spiral notebook while laying down in bed, it didn't start getting warm from me using it too much...''

I just wish laptops had better cooling, like my dad's older laptop had 3 tiny fans in back that did a real good job of keeping it cool w/o it beeing too loud, and I wish that the RAM had better cooling as well... I've thought about custom making my own fan to go under the ram, but unfortunately, I could never find a fan 3mm in width that I needed...lol.

Compaq WAS a good brand untill HP took it over, I HATE HP! Their cust. dis-service reps are horrible. One time I called and was real pissed about something, and asked to speak to a manager, and of course the douche gave me total BS, and to top it off, HE TOLD THE REP. TO APOLOGIZE TO ME! I was like, "You're kidding right? you're making her apologize to me for folowing procedure when your dumb-ass does the same f*cking thing except in a smart-ass way because you know the cust. can't do jack poop....that just gets you off doesn't it!" then I hung up on the bastard....I can't beleive the nerve of some people...
And after that, I got an email from hp to rate how my service was, well of course I gave them the lowest possible on all, and then in the notes section I left a nice little letter about the indian cust. reps who can't speak clear.... (I'm not beein racist, it's just, YOU NEED TO HIRE PEOPLE WHO CAN SPEAK CLEARLY FOR A CUST. REP. JOB!)

*end rant*

Well, almost every call center is routed to some other country. I had problems with my laptop before and called the 24hr number. I got someone in India.

American Express, Dell, Honeywell CRC (it's their avionics customer response center), Linksys, God the list can go on. What cracks me up is when they thank you for calling and say my name is "Dave" or "Jeremy", etc. I asked one guy how long his name was Dave and he laughed. Told him having been over there I never met any Dave's and it was quite an uncommon name.

O ya, linksys is VERY bad for outsourcing to india, NEVER have I called them, and not had to speak to some indian fella who has a thick accent...

the heat sink and air output duct for your processor is either clogged or full of dust. you must clean it up with some compressed air. i have seen this numerous times with all makes of laptops. i usually take off the keyboard and blow air out of the duct.

Ya, I should probably do that to mine as well...it's almost 3 years old and the fan comes on a lot more than before, and I know I need to clean it out....I guess I'm just lazy....lol. And I have 2 air compressors and blow-guns sitting around too....a 20 gallon one for the house, and a little 3 gallon one for the track...

oh good idea mine is pretty new i got it like 4 months ago while i was in the hospital for surgery. but i my dad had an old laptop cooler that he didnt know about so I'm good.
