hello everyone,

looking into getting an 8th scale buggy for racing
I've pretty much gotten it down to a mugen mbx-5 or a kanai 777 sp1
ill be buying used whichever i get and i was just curious which everyone prefers and why?
and is the a differfent electronics tray for the 777 that allows the servo to lay down instead of up( not like i can feel the difference it just kind of ircks me to see it standing up straight)

thx
mike

LOL, Ford vs Chevy?

OK, are you looking for a Prospec in the MBX? If so, you can't go wrong with either buggy. Really. If you have a local track and if anyone has one ask to drive it. Set-up will differ, but you could get an idea. Is the parts supply different for either of them around you? Both have laydown servos.

ok so it is like a chey vs ford ae vs losi type deal...nvm then thx :D

Either buggy will be great. My dad has a MP777 SP1 and its the best handling buggy I ahve ever driven, but I never tried the MBX-5. I think tghe biggiest diff is the MBX has pivotball suspension in the front and the MP777 ahs C-hub. I just like C-Hub better dunno why. But yea, its really a Ford vs Chevy deal.

The MP777s don't have laydown steering servo.

The 777 doesn't have laydown servos.
Just letting you know.

I would add the OFNA Jammin CR1 to your list... The price is right, it's race proven, & can hang right there with the Mugens & Kanai's... Just thought you might want to check it out..

Yes!
We talked about that today as a matter of fact.
If I could do it all over again, I think that the Jammin would be my choice.

It's cheaper, and has the same goodies.

yes the jammin is good i agree but the thing is there is nowhere local to get parts :P
now that i think of it there isn't for the 777 either o well i was leaning towards the underdog...i mean mugen anyway :P

underdog mugen is the best anyway

but Kyosho's staying with the steeringservo way up
for some reason
seems you still got a bit more steering that way

OOPS my bad. How did I forget they didnt go to the laydown?
Like I said, I really dont think you can go wrong with either.

XB8 or Prospec.....nothing takes abuse like those buggies....777 drives great but don't smack it up too much......and I'm not saying they are wimpy by any means, I've just seen them crack up on the same crash that the other 2 brands have driven away from

From my experience with your choices.

The 777 has the best steering performance, it's so good that even in stock setup it will outsteer most (if not all) other buggies out there. For very technical tracks, it will easily allow you to enter/exit hairpins and will have better straight line performance over a longer period (between rebuilds) versus non C-hub designs.

The Mugen MBX5 (standard or prospec) tends to be better at lofty tracks with long sweepers as the Pillow Ball steering is a proven design that's most widely used on onroad cars. The Prospec is a bit more rigid out of the box and has some more hop-ups included to improve rigidity and reliability but will nonetheless perform similarly.

Another one to consider, other than the Ofna, is XB8, as mentioned by Plaidfish. The XB8 is a new kid on the block, it's kinda like a mix between a Kyosho Kanai 3 and a Mugen. It steers like a Kyosho Kanai 3 on the hairpins and straights and handles more like a Mugen on the sweepers. The best innovation it offers is it's unique way of changing caster, toe-in and roll-center by using different plastic bushings which you can change in minutes allowing XB8 owners to dial-in their buggies easily compared to everything else.

Good luck.

Something must have changed between the Kanai 3 and 777sp1 big time then, as the Kanai is the toughest thing I've seen in ages...I don't race, I just bash with it.

Its even gone full bore into a building 2 twice and did heli's bouncing off the side of the building...only thing that broke was 2 titanium screws, and bent the steering plate a little, tapped it back into place and replaced the scres and I was away again. The buggy had lost control (yes I have a fail safe...not sure what happened)

Plus I do 40ft jumps with it all the time...and takes it and comes back for more each time (bad landings and all) The above mentioned incident is the only time I've had to replace parts on the buggy.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks,

I know exactly what you mean...I see more people running the K cars than the 777......I've seen the K2 take a pole between the front arms and drive away....

Hi Mugen-MX2, tell us a little about the buggy circuit in NZ, its not often we meet a buggy techie from there out here. What buggies are popular, what are the trends, who knows more than our resident experts Plaidfish, ImBroken, RatzoRC and Diver6127?

You may start a new thread, I dont want to take away from this.

I'm no expert, not with a buggy or MT. Just getting started in offroad. If it was on-road, then I may know a thing or two but still no expert. Just good at having fun.

What does your LHS stock? How fast can you get parts? Both are awesome buggies. I have both Mugen and Kyosho. They will make you happy either one.

I'm definatly no expert on buggies thats for sure, just know what I've seen. Mike Burgen would have to be the NZ expert!! I just bash them like crazy.

I definatly wasn't saying I know more then Plaidfish...

Sorry, back on topic.

I don't know anything....I just PM corrado and post his answers so I look smart :D (not sweatin ya, just giving props).....I just like to tinker w/ anything metal and I tend to go overboard on any activity I get involved in....in 2 years I'll be into naked kelp midget wrestling..... I dunno....the only way to learn about anything is just do it...if you break stuff don't cry, just figure out how to fix it w/ what ya got......I like Olds97 stuff he posts...that guy needs to get a shop so he can make some really cool stuff....as far as opinions on buggies, I get to run at a track that has a lot of really good drivers...some pros but a lot of real helpful people and willing to share secret tips and what not.....I enjoy seeing all the new toys that show up at mills pond every night I go.....and I enjoy making things that get the wow factor....I tried the K3, MBX-5, XB8 (have one still), OFNAs, Mayhems...I'm lucky enough to get to try em all....If I can give my opinion on a buggy I will, but never take something I say as law and go gung ho on it....every buggy wil fit someones driving ability/style...best way to choose your buggy is to try and get some time running a few and make your decision on that.....I actually bout a used XB8 just to try it and that's the one I like the most....
