Sucks!!!!

Yeah, I'm one of the luck a-holes who managed to pick up the Sasser worm on my home PC this weekend. What a pain in the ass. Every time I get online, lsass.exe implodes and windows shuts down. Talk about a catch 22. Can't go online to fix the problem, but need to get online to fix the problem. Luckily I have my work PC so I've downloaded the Microsoft patch and the Stinger antivrus routine for Norton to my USB drive to take home. Should have it irradicated by nightfall. Time to think about getting a firewall at home....

Thats exactly what I was thinking... don't you have a firewall? If your using the latest patched version of XP it comes with a updated internet firewall built in. It is much more powerful then the previous version. But the price of cable routers with switches built in are so low that there is no reason to not just go and buy one. Good Luck!

Well, unfortunately I'm still on dialup. Where would I find the firewall on XP? I have the home edition so it's probably not on it, right? I do have to download the updates since it's been about 2 weeks since my last update. That's probably how I got Sasser. I may get McAfee firewall to go with my antivirus. I think that's a good idea. My antivirus also found that polybot virus or whatever but fixed that.

Try this... it should still be part of all versions of XP


To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall
Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.
You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing.
ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

Ya know, the more I think about it, the more I think I should have gone for a career in computers. Because I'm seeing more people like me having troubles and I bet you can really cash in on it. Hmmm....I wonder if there's any good home study programs in this area....

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm going to fix Sasser tonight and then activate the firewall. Gotta do all my updates, too once I can get back online. I really appreciate the info....

Man I've lost count how many times the phone has rung about this Sasser virus - we've got 11 computers in the shop now all waiting to be cleaned from it!

i got windows XP home edition and that box isnt check marked. should i check mark it or not? I'm thinkin it would be a good idea.
last night when i was checkin my e-mail, i got a e-mail from Microsoft, and it said something like download this patch to get rid of the worm. but i got that norton anti-virus and it said there was a virus attached. so i just deleted it completely from my mail.

Microsoft NEVER NEVER NEVER sends emails out about patching systems. That is just a virus in itself. I have posted about those emails in the past. Just delete them. If you want to update your system just go to Microsoft's site.
