Or...How I Chromed My Elise 2000..
This time I decided to go basic on the pattern and nuts on the color. Or lack thereof. This is a 200mm HPI Lotus Elise 2000. The body is done almost completely in Alclad II Chrome.
Here's the side:
And the top:
I also decided to do a carbon fiber effect on the rear spoiler and rear window visor:
It also comes with it's own light buckets which I did in carbon fiber, too:
I like this. But I did learn a few things about painting with chrome from this.
1.) Wash the body. Then apply window masks and any pattern masks you're using. Then wash the body again! Any fingerprints or smudges you get on the plastic while masking WILL show up in the chrome. Mistake #1.
2.) Make sure that you get complete coverage when you spray the chrome. Even the tiniest breaches in the chrome will show through as black when you back it. Mistake #2.
3.) Let it dry for quite a while after you're finished. Even the day after, the black backing was still tacky and you could wipe the black and chrome right off.
4.) And this is a general warning, but moreso with chrome. Get a good respirator when painting. This chrome smells VERY strong. And I'm sick of blowing black boogers out of my nose after I'm done painting. The simple fiber respirators that I got for $2 at Ace Hardware didn't stop the paint.
Hope you like it!!!
