Is this normal?

My SG116 max turned up today. Seems to be a step up from the HBX16889 but man, it's noisy. Seems to drive ok but is this right?

Compared to the HBX16889 is really noisy and doesn't feel smooth at all. I'm not sure the central drive/prop shaft should move back and forward by about a quarter of an inch either?
I don't fancy sending it all the way back to China but I'm not keen on tearing it down either

I've had the rear end apart and can't see anything amiss. Removed the weird treacle type stuff that passes for grease in China and replaced with red n tacky. Still not exactly smooth but better than it was.
The brushless motor shaft seems to be the source of the notchiness. Is it usual for them not to turn smoothly?
For best results remember to put the dogbones back in before assembling the arms

Just pull the pinion gear off the motor and then roll it, should be butter smooth.

Not all motors are the same, that "notchy" feeling under no load is irrelevant, need to drive the car on power to see if something is a miss. Majority of my cars sound just like this when rolling them like you have done.

Yeah unsensored brushless motors are known for notchy shaft rotation when no power is being applied

Like if you take a castle system which are top of the line it has that same notchy feeling. It’s just different motor designs. Say for instance, you take a Hobbywing ezrun 3665 2400kv motor and a castle 1416 Y1 2400kv motor and you rotate each shaft, the Hobbywing is going to be butter smooth and super easy to spin the shaft. On the other hand, when you do that with the castle, it will be really hard to turn the motor over and when you do, it will be notchy.

Cheers guys, that's reassuring. It's only my second 'proper' RC (yeah, I know they're cheap) so not much experience. Can't wait to try it outdoors as it seems to go like the clappers!

Bit difficult to film while driving lol. It's insanely fast just on the included 2S Li-ion. My 2S Li-po's have just come through the letterbox too

It’s a 32P gear pitch most likely. Pretty noisy, the hbx could be a 48p. Wait until you get something in the “mod” gear pitches. Those gears scream.

Yes, I'm reassured there's nothing wrong with it now. It certainly feels very solid and it's probably about 50% heavier than the HBX which is due to the massive 2847 motor, larger battery and metal drive train parts (although I'm not sure about the durability of these in a basher).
Bizarrely it was slightly cheaper than the HBX
