ME.

I was out on the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON for the last couple of days. Pretty cool to be on a carrier with little to do but watch aircraft come and go. SO, I took a couple of pictures. Nothing nearly as exciting as Pirata's whirlwind tour of Panama, but I'm sure you'll like them. Check my gallery or go HERE

ENJOY.

them are pretty kool pics man. my dad had retired from the air force and he took me too an air force base that he worked at and they took me for a ride in an F-16 over the summer. IT WAS THE CRAZYIEST RIDE IN MY LIFE. holy poop i didnt know what the hell was going on.:music:

I'm sure it was a blast. The pictures I posted are just some examples of a day at my office (when I am aboard the carrier). I see it so often, that I sometimes forget just how awesome it is.

I dont care what you say Sky, I would still poop my pants knowing I was taking off from a carrier in a prop plane! poop MY PANTS I tell ya'!

Looks like you had a good time man!

I'd rather be on the E-2C than one of the jets. The jets have a higher landing speed and glide like a brick compared to the E-2C's.

Aircraft carriers are BADASS! I always wanted to work on one ever since I was a kid and saw Top Gun. It was all the rules and the whole you can't smoke herbs thing that detoured me from a life in the service. It makes sense though A guy flying a 25million dollar aircraft or whatever taking bong hits is a bad idea.:mex:

You probably already saw this Sky but I always liked this one.

That is real. It is of an F-18 Hornet when it breaks the sound barrier. See how it picks up water from the ocean because it is going so fast! I love that video

El Pirata,

Yes, the pictures were taken from the island. And no, not just anyone can take pictures from there...only those actually aboard the carrier during flight operations. When was the last time you were there, huh smart ass?

Humboldtblazer and mcvickj,

Yes, that is indeed real. Unfortunately it is not an F/A-18, but it IS a F-14 Tomcat. The water condensation or vapors as we refer to them are not actually moisture picked up from the ocean (although it is a source for humidity). When anything breaks the sound barrier a shock wave gets generated in front of the object. That shockwave compresses the air in front of the shock wave. This causes any moisture in the air to condense into "clouds" or vapors. The faster the object moves past the speed of sound, the further back that shock wave moves on the object. That is why when you first see the aircraft it looks to be behind the vapors and as it moves through the shot, you see it actuall start to pierce the vapors.

This video was shot during an air power demonstration put on for a family day cruise. Tomorrow, I am going to be taking my father-in-law aboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON for the same thing. We have the kind of weather we need for that kind of show, but the weather may worsen to the point where we can't have the air wing fly. Either way, I'll bring my cameras and video camera and see if I can catch some on film.

Somewhere in my collection, but not readily accessible. I'll see what I can dig up.

What's really impressive is how the pilot managed to break the sound barrier at the moment he passed the vessel.

I'm sure that cracked everyone's ears pretty well, too.
