LOL....yeah, it's the smoke. If you happen to catch them erupting, you'll have a few seconds to get safely outside while your house burns to the ground.

I have a lithium cell from an rc plane battery with bad connectors that I am going to shoot through with my air rifle. Hopefully it will react and burn.
