First of all... I want to thank everybody that contributed and helped me with THIS... :thankyou: thank you.

Now back to topic... I've decided to get my 1st RC (dunno if that counts as 1st as I have been playing with those MICRO RCs on top of my desk at work and have had a blast :)) but anyway, I want to get myself a DRIFT car. Why drift? coz well let's see... I love to race (UG in NY) heck... I even went into the MAZDA event and tried to burn the rubber on their RX-8 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park - Englishtown, NJ :arrr:

So since I can't drift my car even if I wanted to... maybe I'd go all assault on a mini scale drifting :ponder2: :)

For starts, I want to get (then again) a ready drift car out of the box... or RTD so they say. Went to go visit a local hobby shop and all they have are YOKOMO RTD Package (all you have to buy are batteries). Their RTDs ranges from $325 to well over $400.

Is YOKOMO any good?

Thank you

they aren't the best setup to drift....if you want to get something you can no tfreak out when it hits a curb, get a used TC3 and buy th eABS plastic wheels...use 2 of them in the rear and foams or rubber on front....set the suspension real stiff and get a rear sway bar for it......I set one up like that w/o radio gear for 120 bucks....and now I go to a skatepark w/ it and beat on it like a red headed step child......the AE cars will be the most common Touring cars out there so parts will be easy to get....yokomo is a lil harder to come by.....most shops carry the drift rtr but look wha thtey offer in parts ofr them......

Yokomo makes excellent upper end cars but they also make a lot of budget stuff...the Drift RTR is kind of low grade overpriced RC because they put plastic rings onthe tires and plastered "DRIFT" on the box....that's my opinion on it.....BTW I have an older MR4-2 pro yokomo car and for racing it's one helluva TC....

LOL@red headed step child :eyes:

I like the sound of $120... so how can I get by with it? Should I go on a used one? I do need a realiable chasis and parts as it would surely be abused by a first timer :sheep::whip: ... :hehe:

I don't mind spending more on the parts that really matter most but I would like to get more bang for my buck (so to speak). Let's say if I put a mark at $250 max budget for a new one... is it doable? What would you guys recommend?

Thanx

well drifting IS one aspect of racing...I don't mean the drift competitions, I mean taking an S-turn at speed while drifting can give you a cleaner line....I like that aspect of racing buggies myself...I used the TC3 to help me learn throttle control and it helps me drift real tight corner changes.....
check E-bay for used TC3...I see factory team models for about 100-150 (rolling chassis) in real nice condition....XPS ESC for 45 and a decent stock motor for 20....then radio gear prefference...I use a 625MG for steering (lil overkill) and figure 100 for decent radio gear......so altogether about 300 bucks...BUT you still need battery packs and charger too......I use sport packs but if I get into racing I'll need to get matched cells to keep up w/ the local roadies.......

I got lost on how a love for racing has led you or anyone else to drifting:ponder2:
Main reason for opting to a drift RC... it looks fun and I think I would enjoy it much better than running straight thru and jumping on mounds (but I admit... I like doing that too :)). Plus... I could play with it right down at our fairly large basement if I get bored :hehe:

@Plaidfish:
I'll see what I'll come up with.... ;)

Oh I agree drifting is probaly fun, thats not really what I'm pointing out. Now I'm not sure how it works out in RC terms but in 1:1 real cars, drifting isn't racing. It's a sport based on style and how well you roast your tires. The finnish line is replaced by judges. There is no first place for crossing the line first because that part has been replaced by judges who determen who wins based on the above mentioned. The whole drifting idea came about in places like Japan where they would skid around passing cars on mountains etc. I'll spare you my other views on that whole "I don't want to go straight " line also. Just say I've heard that before. Well I'm sure I've ruffled some feathers on that one so I'll be quite.

It's all prefference man....I can't see setting up a 1:1 car just to go around 2 turns of a track and be judged on their "Style"....I agree that's NOT RACING!!!!
But the skills used by those guys when applied to racing can make you a better driver for sure......in offroad racing you need to be able to drift and keep your line in some spots or you'll be too slow.....

As long as you get good part support from a local hobby shop Yokomo drifters are a good way to start.

To me drifting is to driving what ballet on ice is to skating. You need judges to win...in other words...not for me. But drifting is fun,and skilled drifters can put on a serious show.

PS Today I was about to buy another RC,the Yokomo drifter RTR with the Nissan Skyline body, going to get it next week.Had to restrain myself...

Looked into ebay but it just made my head spin :jittery: there's just too much too many and I can't seem to slim down my choices :ponder2:
In other words, I'm lost and really don't know what to look for :opps:

Thevilone,

Going to nab it this weekend,Sunday and I'll post pics.Yokomo is the one to get if you are lookingt for a quality starter drifter.Just get a 3300MAH six cell pack and a peak charger if you do not have these.

Talked to my local hobby shop about parts/support for YOKOMO RTDs and here's what they have to say:
On parts, they do not have parts for yokomo on stock but they can assure of a 3-5 biz days if requested.
For support, as long as you bought it from them they'll help you install ii or either install the part/s for you for no charge. They'll also tune it for you free.

I would say that's not bad at all and well worth it. With that in mind, I most likely be getting one from them... What do you think?

If and all would agree that this would be the best way to go about the purchase, I need recommendations on which RTD package to get (they're entirely the same inside but I need recommendations on the body)

NOTE: Click on thumbnail images for more detailed pictures.

Included in all READY-TO-DRIFT kits:

Ditto!

I just love the looks of a Skyline...thats coming from a diehard demestic owner aslo ;)

Skyline
Skyline
Skyline
after that fast and furry-2 that's all I friggin hear from the lil kids here....my buddies kid thinks his first car is going to be one.......there's tuner shops all over here doing the 240sx (or whatever that budget model they made the skyline out of is) conversion......I've only seen 1 real one here (left side driver) but I don't think a day goes by where I don't see a shitbox conversion lookin thing on the road....GRRRRR...okay nuff about the car body from me....

Evil for 325 seriously look for a TC3 or TC4 if you want a new one (RTR is about the same as the yokomo)...much better car and parts are ALOT easier to get.....

Went to a local hobby shop today and they have the TC4 RTR (red only) which is under $300. What about HPI Sprint 2 RTR... are they any good?
They have these in stock:

do the bodies REALLY make a difference in handling when it's just drifting??
I kow it does when you race but that's alot to do w/ aerodynamics and the downforce the body gives.....drifting is all slow breakin traction stuff
