Attention eBay Sellers,

I have bought several things FROM sellers on eBay but I have never sold anything via eBay. I have an eBay seller account and I have a PayPal account which I have used to pay for my eBay purchases. I will soon be selling several items, mostly painted R/C car and truck bodies. I want to do this on eBay and maybe on Yahoo Auctions.

Since I have an eBay seller account and a paypal account, am I basically all set? I'd like to hear some advice on eBay selling from those who have experience with it.

Thanks,

EB

If you have your credit/debit card setup, then you're all ready to go. One thing about ebay though, they charge a varying amount to sell the item and charge a percentage of the final bid. So it can add up.

I personally wouldn't bother with yahoo auctions. They were good, but no one goes there anymore so don't waste your time, or money.

I understand that so far. Am I supposed to charge sales tax?

Nope, not unless you have your own business. And even if you do, that's only if you sell an item to someone within the same state as you.

just go into the ebay seller thing and put in the required information. if you're needing or lacking something they will tell you. ebay and paypal and sort of merged and that helps things out a bit. if your paypal account isn't setup correctly, for example, ebay should be able to tell you.

here is a little tip for ebay sellers. if you start your auction at a penny with no reserve, you won't get nearly as many fees. the only problem is this is kind of scary. LOL. the thing is that no one is going to let a body, for example, go for a penny. So someone will bid $0.50 and then someone else will just have to get in on the deal. The bid keeps going up until it finds a fair market price. It's kind of cool how it works out. sometimes, yuo'll be lucky enough to have a bidding war. then some poor sucker is stuck paying more than he should for your item. the only thing is that you want to have a nice auction that explains everything. if you give bad information not not enough information, people will not bid and some jerk will get your item for cheap. :(

good luck and happy dealing.

Hey Rob,

That 0.01 no reserve deal is more than scary. However, I looked up E-Maxx bodies on eBay and none of them seem to have reserves. I dunno ...

Yeah - I just actually made out suprisingly geat on a 4-tec pro. The guy wanted 225 but I won it for 150 because people just stopped bidding at the end...mostly because I am 3 hours ahead of all the other bidders and they were sleeping. He had no reserve so he had to sell it to me. I felt bad...but not too bad.

It will be here next week!!

My experience with E-bay is that it is all timing. There are so many items in the RC acutions, that no-one has time to look at them.

For instance, selling a body, you have to use categories. RC trucks and RC truck accesories. You get hit for 2x fees.

Most people do a search, and see what is coming up for close soon. Then, they wait as long as possible to bid. 98% of my auctions go until the last 30 minutes with no bid, and then get 2 or 3 bidders.

You could drive yoruself nuts in the begining. Don't check every few hours to see who bid, no-one did. Wait until the end and watch if you have to.

Then, once someone bids and wins, you have to wait for payment, that may not come. After you get payment, you have to pay paypal their fees.

If your item is expensive, you just need to know that almost 10% of the final price will be going to fees.

I found that if you list miscellaneous rc terms, names, brands, etc... at the end of your description, the auction more likely to be seen when people use th search option...

ex. T-Maxx, tmaxx, Savage, HPI, OFNA, Proline, Parma, Faskolor, Allclad II, HotBodies....& so on.
These will bring up your item when searched for... Also, make sure that your auctions end either Sat or Sunday. That is when the bid wars really happen....

Also remember, the time that you post the auction, is the time that it will close. So start it at around 3pm on the weekend to get maximum bidding. When I auctioned my Nitro Ob4, I lost out probably at least $100 because I posted at 11pm on the west coast.

Having bought a lot of stuff off ebay, I cannot stress enough how important it is to be honest and as complete as possible with the item description. I also never like bids that do not specify shipping charges. I will never bid on say, a $10 item and pay $6 for shipping. I have shipped stuff I've sold privately and most of the time the ebay seller's shipping charges seem to be on the high side. Packaging is important if you want a person to purchase from you again. I like when I receive a well packaged and protected item. A cheaply taped up box with newspaper stuffed inside and the item bouncing around inside tells me not to buy from that person again. Bubble wrap and/or popcorn packaging is excellent and sends a professional message to the buyer. Obviousely, these things need to be considered in the shipping costs and the item description should state such.

i do care alot also about how it is shipped and everything but i do not care too much if it is in newspaper or what it is packed in. just as long as it gets to me in good condition as said.

Do you think 7 day auctions are a waste of time?
