I was driving it today and all of a sudden it made a click sound and then stopped and then now I just rev up the gas and it just revs and smokes and I don't know why.

try to figure out where the rotation of the engine stopped. it really sounds like it might have either just been a tooth on a trans gear or a pin in the trans, but all depends on where the rotating stops.

I think it stops on the engine

I took the engine off and my spur gear spins freely

i was more meaning, when the engine was running where does it stop, if the spur spins freely without the tires spinning, it probably means something in the trans,
