I Hate Soldering!

Dang, slowngreen, that's a nice gun...sssssspensive! :D

So worth it. I guarantee that others here who have a real nice iron setup will agree that its a night and day difference over a cheap one.

I see quite a few prices there... from 229 all the way up to (GULP!) NINE HUNDRED BUCKS? Nobody pays a grand for a soldering station... DO they?

Haha, it's on the link YOU put up. At the bottom.

EDIT: Never mind, my bad... that was for buying in quantities. Probably for schools or employers. I saw 907 bucks and was like WHOA!

Yeah a soldering station for $900+ better come with a set of lips and no how to make dinner...:hehe:

My LHS thought me a good trick to get easy and quick good solders, What he does is he put some solder on the tip of the soldering iron and then tins the wire and connector. this trick helps because you are immediately heating it up much quicker than just putting the iron on the wire/connector and waiting for it to heat up.

I used to hate soldering until I picked up a Hakko 936 station (Team Checkpoint is a clone if this one). Now...it's a joke. I use solder with flux built in...never have any issues with it at all and with the nice hot iron...I can solder darn near anything within 5 seconds or so ;-)

I'm happy to report that after reading all this, my second pack went much better. No cold joints, and didn't take long at all.

There are a couple threads on soldering somewhere here in this section, I even did a video, it has no sound but all the info is there, I helped get SNG where he is today when it comes to soldering, LOL!!!! I know it has already been said but a clean tip, flux, a thin rosin core solder(and not that lead free crap), a wet sponge for keeping the tip clean and a 3rd hand tool all make for better and easier soldering.

Here is probably all the info you will ever need to solder, LOL!!!!

^^Hey thanks abakd, that's awesome, and the vids are great. So, my tip is pretty much shot, it's pitted pretty good. So, I'm not buying a tip for a cheap iron, I'd rather just buy a soldering station and some extra tips for that.

Also, what do you guys think of this station? It's a rebranded Madell AT201D that I can pick up at Radio Shack, or ask for it for Christmas.

I got my Hakko 936 used for $50 on another rc site. They pop up all the time....I imagine anything with an adjustable temp will serve you better than a cheapy 40 watt Radio Shack Iron. I mean the 40 watters do work, it's just a pain in the rear.

I got my eye on this one:

BTW, Woodie and abadk, I just went entirely through the soldering threads and all the videos/write ups in them. Super cool! I really learned a lot, and I have been soldering for years haha. That was cool of you guys to take your time and explain things CORRECTLY. I'll choose correct over half-assed any day of the week.

Thanks guys! :)

The best soldering station that I've used was a Weller with Digital Temperature control. I used this when I used to build avionics a while back.
