I am new to 1/8, but I have previously been racing a RC10GT with an OS engine.

I just bought a Hyper 7 PBS, but I am having major problems starting it. The starter box that came with it is hardly turning the engine over and the rubber wheel now has a nice groove in it. I have managed to start it a couple of times, but when it stalls I cannot get the engine to turn over again, just stuck solid.

I read that you need to heat up the engine to get it to turn over, never had to do this with my OS engine!

Do I need to buy a new starter box?
Any help would be appreciated?

The engine has a lot of compression making it difficult to start. Try loosening the glow plug a little when starting it. Then retighten once you get it started. These are just break in pains. Once you get it broken in, You will find that it will start much easier.

Thanks, but I have tried this, I am still having problems getting the engine to turn over.

Hey Zappa, let me know if you find out how to start the thing, I just got one myself and have the same problem but I haven't been able to get mine started yet. Spent the whole weekend with no results. I am frustrated with this thing and am thinking of dumping it. The starter box they give ya is junk.

Best bet is to get a better starter box.

If not, heat the engine up first with a heat gun or hair dryer and possibly loosen up your plug a little bit. That should help a lot.

Also if you want you can put a pullstart on it for break in, and then if you want take if off after break in. The stock starter box will turn the engine over no problem after break in.

I am ordering a new starter box tonight and should be here by end of week so will try to start the beast again then. I will let you know if this worked or not. It is a spendy way to go but if it gets the job done it will be worth it.

Zappa,

I just received my Hyper 7 PBS/PCR on Friday. This is my first nitro car. I read the instructions cover to cover (which, to be frank, are marginal at best). With high expectations I tried to start the buggy. Nothing - I couldn't come close to starting it.

I went to my LHS and two of the employees were very helpful. They ended up having to turn the master carb screw 7 1/2 turns out to start the thing. With some more fine tuning the engine continued to run. We were able to lean it out as the engine idled.

I put about 6 tanks of gas through it on Sat. and Sun - breakingin the engine following Traxxas guidelines (from the T-Maxx manual). It starts right up and is running great. I can't believe the power!

Good luck.

I ended up taking my Hyper 7 back to the model shop who sent it back to the distributor. I have just had it back after them running 2 tanks through it, they did say that I had altered the needle settings on the engine, although I had not touched them.

Well anyway to cut along story short I heated up the engine a little with a hair dryer and ran 8 tanks through it on Saturday. The engine is now turning over and starting on the original starter box, but I'm not sure whether the box will be good enough to start the engine up with heating it first!

I think I will look into buying a new starter box when I have the money. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good starter box that is available in the uk?

Thanks for all the help!

I tell you.. the Hyper 8 port motor is one of the hardest motors i ever had to break in.. i personally got a good starterbox for my kyosho.. and never had to break in my own 8 port.. but helping a buddy who got one.. that thing was the biggest pain ever.. mainly cuz the piston would get stuck at TDC.. if you didnt have the idle up.. once we got through the first tank.. it wasn't too bad.. but that box took a beating.. stick with it.. that motor is fast as heck.. and you will like it..
