We put the Hyper 21 8 Port in the Lightning RR today and got it all broke in.. This thing is unreal... I was a little dissapointed with the Lightning after getting the Storm, but after this engine swap we couldnt be happier.. I cannot believe how much difference there is in some of these engines.. direct fit also, so even I had no problem.. Love the low-end it has now PUNCH! can really smoke the tires on the street if your not careful.. love to hear from anyone thats had experience with this motor, and if you know of a better one near this 140 dollar price tell me.. I'll get it for the Storm.. Peace...

You all knew this was comming. LOL

I have the Hyper 8-port Race in my Lightning Pro. I don't think you can find a better race legal engine for the price. The picco .26 is pretty cheap and will smoke that standard 8-port (prolly smoke my race version too but not as bad). The thing is that .26 is not race legal. I think you got a winner. Try putting the race version in your storm. It would be interesting to hear how much faster it really is.

This guy sells the race version with a pull start (not OFNA. he gets them direct from Ho Bao):

doh. forgot the price $165 + shipping from that guy I mentioned for the race version.

8-Port

You think that 8-port is insane? I took my HB PRO out of the box and immediately bolted up a C4......CRAZY POWER! The HB handles it no problem, have yet to break anything either

You know that is an oxy moron right? There really is no "race" engine that is pullstart. The reason being the crank on PS takes away from the bhp of the engine.

i like my 8 port race.. and i got mine 165 shipped from him.. off ebay auction though.. aka direct.. i wanna try it in my lightning one day.. but since my track is no rules.. i plan to throw the over torque picco 26 in it after i get better with it..

Here you go again...

YOU ---> :stick: <--- ME

I heard that thing about the one way taking revs from the engine a long time ago. When I brought it up with the LHS guys, he made a good point. If the buggy stalls out on the track, you don't have to drag it back to the starter box. They think a pull start as a back up is a good idea. Also I don't have a starter box, (yeah yeah I should get one). I think a lot of people like the pull start version for the Savage because starter boxes don't work on MTs. The last reson doesn't pretain to me much, but you can see why people would want the pull start version regaurdless of the engine performance thing.

your buggy shouldnt stall on the track. Thats the whole reason race buggies and race engine are made from better quality stuff. They are more reliable when tuned properly. Racing 1:8's for 10 minutes straight is gruling and only top notch stuff takes the punishment and comes out winning.

I've seen buggies stall on the track.. during the 5 min warm up period.. and with the driver being a good 100ft away up the ramp to be on the 15+ft tall stand, the poor nice old corner marshels tend to restart it for you..

you know I've read so much bad stuff about pull starts.. particularly breaking them.. but I've been using them for awhile now and have never had a problem... this is the 4th motor with a pull start.. I always make sure I have a good prime and all of'm fire up on the first few pulls 90% of the time.. I dont know if I'm lucky or careful or what.. as far as losing performance, We aren't good enuf to notice the difference.. but I would like to get a starter box soon.. thanks for the comments and thanks for the link Rob... I might just have to get the race version for the Storm... can't handle my son going faster and being quicker.. :) Peace!!

I'm still on original pull start after 2 gal.. its just i pay attention to its feel.. i fit starts to feel as if it does nto retract right i take it off clean th edirt/dust/grit out of it.. if it feels to hard to pull i will loosen the glow plug then tighten it up after running...

i am also on my stock 21bb pull start in my savage engine too, original os on my 15 hyper, original hpi one on th enitrostart 12.. and i hav enever as of yet broken any pull start..

:) glad to hear that.. I was starting to think I just didnt try hard enough.. It kinda reminds me of all the tmaxx 2.5 engine bashing.. so many were screaming and yelling that the engine was just impossible to tune.. but with some patience it really isnt that bad and it's a pretty killer engine.. I think it's easy to get impatient with anything but it your careful most of our stuff has proven pretty reliable and durable.. Peace..

i know others on originals too... so its not a fluke.. i think it is more of how you treat it as far as force, and using common sence like in my hmm does not feel like it is retracting right, take off and clean it issues..

How reliable a engine starts depends on how well it is tuned and how well it has been maintained. Pull starts are reliable, never said they were not. The point I was trying to make is manufacturers dont make a pull start racing engine there is simply no such thing when talking about RC racing. The crank is weighted different on a PS compared to a bumpstart. The bumstart is weighed equally and there is not drag on the crank like in a pull start.

Look at this pdf:
http://www.osengines.com/parts/ev13844-13845.pdf
They show you there is a different crank for the PS version vs the BS version. The illustration really doesn't show the different shapes of the crank but they a real different.

Overall PS are very easy to start it is a great method. BS are actuually harder for me to start but I think thats because I am using a crappy starter box for a very high compression engine so it gives me fits. If you take that exact engine in the .pdf the BS is faster (has more bhp) than the PS version.
