Hpi trophy truggy

Hey fellow Rc'ers,I got a HPI Trophy Truggy.After some run time,I figured I would do a write up. Out of the box,the suspension is to soft. A little tweeking and all is good.

The stock engine was removed.Installed an LRP.28 with full mod.Coupled with an JP-2 tuned pipe. The engine mounts will need modded a little. First grind both ends of both mounts and you will have to raise the mount a little. I used 4 nuts to do this. I placed the nuts first and then placed the mounts on top of them.

Upgraded steering servo. The stock failed on the first week. Used my radio system. After 3 months of putting her through the paces. I would have to say, very well built.Soars and lands those huge jumps. So far nothing has broken.And I have crashed it,on some of those hard landings. Would handle better with diff,wheels and tires.In the process of finding adapters, wheels and tires. That will work. Taking suggestions. All in all, great truggy at a great price. A diehard HPI fan, could definitely turn this is to a racer.

I've also grown to like mine considering I mostly just bash it around, as usual did have to upgrade the servos. Mine is currently being fitted with the Nova Plus 28 7t and a Jp3 exhaust, decided to start wit the stock but for sure it will be modded sooner or later. Was a curious if the stock motor mount will allow the flywheel on the werks medium aluminum clutch setup to engage wit the bump start or will I have to also change the motor mount. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I love my trophy 4.6. Its all stock, even the steering servo.

I just purchased one of these today the HPI Racing 1/8 Trophy 4.6 Truggy Nitro 2.4GHz RTR for my Xmas present to me. Had a 60 buck Tower Hobby discount that I could not pass up so I got the Truggy for about $380.00 plus free shipping. Love the Super Saver Club membership occasionally I get the Hobby Store discount on my orders.

Hopefully I will have a few warm days this winter to break in the engine but doubt it will probably wait until we get 60 to 70 degree weather again and let it sit on a shelf till spring time.

@Joe thats how i got mine from tower,had the same discount and free shipping.I also wanted to add that the front and rear chassis support braces are HD and aluminum,stock.That's a plus @Buggy.it should work for you.I had to mod my mounts because it was an Lrp,(bottom of case is made diff )and I kept my engine with the pull start.Looks as though any bump start engine will work.UPDATE...The LRP acted up yesterday.I took the engine apart and the rear bearing took a crap.Only lasted a gallon.ordered new boca bearings..JUST SOME INFO...I usually always change out the bearings in my engines,exspecially when getting a mod.The engine after a mod,will rev alot higher and factory bearings usually are not designed for higher revs.Boca Bearings have bearings designed to with stand 15,000+ more revs then stock. Also when choosing an engine that you want to get modded,it is best to start with a good quality engine.(high quality does not nescessarily mean big$$$)because all internal parts are going to be moving alot faster,which=wear and tear.So all in all it was my own fault for the Lrp bearing going bad.

@Skwerly Yeah it deff,runs.This is the first for me,to have the Lrp do that.I have always had great luck with them.I am going to replace the bearings.I just picked up a New Losi 8ight t-2.0,I bought and pieced it together.I have $450 in the complete set up,minus the engine and pipe.Got a new picco.28 which I just received the other day.waiting to send it out to get modded.I can't wait for Spring.I will slam it in the 8ight and watch her rip!

For me it was a toss up between the HoBao Hyper 7 SS buggy that used to be imported by Ofna and now part of the HPI Racing or the Truggy. I have been wanting one of each for years along with the other 7 Offroads I have in my collection. Each R/C I own has it's own feel on the track. I choose the Truggy because of the wider stance and tires since I run on loose dirt most of the time. I have seen a couple of Losi and Team Truggies run at the track and they take a double in a single leap with the big block engines. That is why I bought it but without the $800.00 buck price tag.

wildwilly...did u use the stock engine mounts? i just bought a LRP .30 from a friend. brand new never ran. was going to get the .28 but for $70 i couldnt pass it up. from the pic i couldnt tell what u had to grind on the motor mounts. did u have to grind the bottom of the mounts also?

yeah,I used the stock mounts.Looking at the pic,see where the humps are on the mount.just grind both ends of the mounts(long ways) up to about where the humps are.(actually the threads for the screws)That's all that needs done to the mounts.no grinding the bottom.And then place the nuts under the mounts.

Some FYI..The perfect battery for this , 2500mah has a futuba j and bec connector.you can get off ebay for $25.I have used one for two years now and still going strong.Traxxas Revo 17mm adaptors will work with a little drilling.I had a new set of Revo 17mm adaptors laying around.Got out my new drill and went to work.Just matched two drill bits up to the size of the axle shaft.The shaft is rather thick,then tapers down to a smaller size.I used a 6.4mm and drilled all the way through.Then flipped it over and the side that faces the axle bearing,I used a 8.0mm.( i think,cause that is all i can makeout on the bit) and drilled about a 1/4 way through.Then I used my 90 grinder and grinded the (side that faces the axle bearing) down just a little..Works great.

I installed a hump pack by cutting the BEC connector off the 4 cell alkaline then I cut the leads about one inch on one lead 1.5 inches on the other lead on the battery pack. Twisted the three leads together each of the positive and negative leads than soldered the BEC connector inline ... Taped up the staggered solder joints with some electrical tape.

The futaba style connector I hung out of the battery box for a charge lead so I never have to open the battery box for a long time. Worked very well for me.

Yeah,I leave the Futaba hanging out of the compartment too.Also the stock wheels work with the Traxxas adapters.

I'm interested in buying my first truggy, I'm wondering what the difference between th HPI trophy truggy, and the HPI hellfire

Is one in anyway better than the other... I have a smashed hellfire, and a run over thunder tiger truggy.....bought them that way from a local basher...never tried to fix the hellfire, an I fear the thunder tiger needs, well lets just say it needs everything

Hi guys. I have had my HPI Trophy 4.6 for 3 weeks now. I have gone through a con-rod already. That's what happens when you let a 13 yr old have a go on your "toy", so won't be doing that again. Anyway...I have just gone up to 25% nitro (Big Bang) from 20% (Optifuel). I have noticed a slight power gain and less blue smoke. Only thing I can not iron out is a slight loss of power or "bog" when I give it some WOT from standing...any ideas? I have reset all my needles post my next bash.
All in all a great truggy that can take some stick. Big fan or bashing but have been invited down to my local track next week end.

Trophy 4.6 Hop Ups

Now that I have the tuning sorted (richen the HSN and LSN slightly) I am looking to (over time) upgrade certain parts. Would the shock towers from the 3.5 buggy fit the 4.6 truggy? I know some parts are interchangeable. I am looking for some alloy shock towers in the HPI Orange colour.

I believe the towers are interchangeable.
