Hi guys, I'm almost at the end of a Savage XL rebuild, however my steering servo seems to be, well, I don't know, broken, possibly, possibly not...
The main issue is that when the wheels turn left or right, they don't completely return to the neutral position, and the servo seems very sluggish in its response to a quick left-right turn. Something I have noticed is, if I remove one steering arm, as to leave only one wheel able to turn, it works okay...
Do you guys think I could do with replacing the servo?
thanks, gang!

In my experience HPI servos aren't the greatest quality. I'd look to upgrade to a Savox or Hi tec sometime soon.

It only has 125oz @6V. Personally, I wouldn't run anything less than 150oz on a MT. Sounds like you might have a bit of binding in your linkage somewhere if it's not returning home and is sluggish with the wheels off the ground.

This won't break the bank, but should work well with a savage:

Tactic servos are pretty cheap, did a quick search and seem to be ok servos:

Personally, I only run waterproof or o-ring sealed servos since I tend to run in damp grass or snow. I've always had good luck with hitec servos:

I do run a savox in one of my revos:

It tends to cause my other servo to glitch a bit, so I added a cap to the receiver which calmed it down significantly.

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbykin...2_TGY_1501MG_MG_Servo_15_5kg_0_16sec_60g.html

also there trackstar servos are pretty good for the money
here is a link to view all there servos
http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__84__189__Servos_Parts-All_Servos.html

also a word of advice its usually best to have the car powered on when setting servo arm position that way the servo is centred and you can align your wheels/throttle properly

Hi! Thanks for all that info! I think I'll give the Hi Tec servo a whirl, but I can't seem to find how many splines it has, or what horn to use, would you know from experience?
Thank again :)

It should say on the box, and say on the horn.

Most if not all hitec servos are/have 24T splined output, most of them even come with a servo horn, all my hitec 7950s came with blue aluminum ones that are tapped with a 2mm hole to attach the linkage (drag link), but you'll need one tapped to 3mm?...sorry its been months since I've acquired anything new for my savage.
