I have several stick packs that I believe are past their prime (at least my charger tells me so) and I'm thinking of taking them apart and salvaging any of the cells I can. My question is, if I'm using a voltmeter, how do I tell if that cell is worth holding onto or not? What reading should I be looking for on the voltmeter? I realize I'm probably not being as clear as I need to, so let me know what other details you need. I'm fairly ignorant on these things, I admit!
 
i have no idea, ....but I'm gonna guess you couldnt tell with a voltmeter.

I'm guessing you could do it with a small bulb discharge station, & time each cell discharge?
 
I can only give a suggestion...
Here it goes.
Solder a wire about 3 feet long on too the pos+side of the battery...Next stick the neg- end on your toung...Go to the bathroom and pee on the Pos+ end

You can judge witch ones are good by the sensation's you get:ponder2:

well you could put wires and a bit of solder on each cel and peak charge them. Then check the voltage rating on them. What cells are they? Generic?
 
The issue is 2 fold, well 3 fold.
How far do they charge and how fast do they discharge. The 3rd fold if you are interested is the discharge curve.

You will need a High end battery charger to make it easy. If you have one it will provide all this info for you on a pack as a whole or for an individual cell.

To make a good guess you can use any charger and a discharge tray or light rack. Discharge your cell to .09-.6v, fully charge the cell then time how long the cells take discharge back to the above listed v. The cells that last longest will be your strongest cells. Use the 6 best from the lot.

Thanks fellas! I especially found Zandor's suggestion the most practical and prudent!

I'll rig something up to charge and discharge each cell and see what I got. Thanks!
