hey guys

i need your help. I was able to picked up a used, but well maintained MF2 roller today for about 125 bucks. I was originally intending to strip it down for parts but it had a quantum competition ESC and orion revolution modified 11x2 motor installed so after some haggling the old owner agreed to include the electronics for a few bucks more. now my question is, did i get a a decent deal or did i get skunked? i'm a complete newb and got caught in the 'buying' excitment. he claims the motor has less than 25 minutes on it and the ESC was just installed. I did a little searching, but couldnt find this ESC at the major chains.

so help me out guys...

thanks

The Quantum ESC is made by a company called LRP. It's not all that old. Perhaps a year, maybe two or three at most.

Overall, I'd say you got a fairly good deal. The XXXT is still the current chassis in Electric Stadium 1/10th by Losi. If it's in great shape, I'd say you got about what the "blue book" on these things are.

thanks HB.
Any idea if teh motor is good? where do i solder the ESC wires too? there are no tabs... the red wire looks to be solder right to the hood, but the shrink wrap is covering most of the connection joint.

It sounds like the soldering tabs may be broken off. Perhaps post a pic of the endbell? The soldering tabs are at either end of the metal portion of the endbell (on either side of the screws that hold it onto the can).

The best way to tell if a motor is good is to bolt it up and try it out. For a visual inspection, remove the brushes from the hoods and look for carbon glazing (blackening) of the tips. Also, inspect the comm (the part on the armature that the brushes ride against) for "trueness" (if it's shaped like an hourglass, even slightly, it's in need of a cutting on a lathe).

okay. i'll rip into it tonight and post pics. thanks for all the help.

The MF2 is still competitive. Quantum Competition is is LRP's first generation of mini speed controllers, Small, good, no motor limit..good speed controller. Even though its 3 models old it's still a good controller. New they were in the $150 to $179 depending where you got them. The motor is ready for a new set of brushes and probably a cut on the com..(this is going by the 25 min. statement). The Tabs are fine the revolution mod. does not have tabs in the traditional sense..

The Cooper around the brushes are the tabs. The whole deal on did you get a good deal, depends on what you think when you look at it..To me you did good you got a Truck that's still competitive at the club level, some top line electronics. IT should be fast also.
