what is a general good guidline to follow on cleaning the air filter? Like how many tanks to go through before it's time to clean?

Depends on the tank size and filter type. A stock T-Maxx needs the filter cleaned every hour of running time. A good aftermarket filter can run 5 tanks or more (in my opinion).

If you buy extra filter media and clean and oil three or four at once it becomes much less of a chore!

I put the oil on and put the media in a zip bag to work the oil in, then store in the same bag.

It really depends on where you drive it but generally every bash session I will clean the whole truck to make sure nothing is broken and at that time check the filter for dirt and maybe rinse. If you are just driveing it around on pavement then you are good for awhile maybe 8-10 tanks before I would check it out. It's always good to give your rig the once over after driveing it to make sure screws are tight and what not.

If it was me I would check my filter regularly to make sure. Nothing sucks worse the having to do a rebuild because crap got sucked into your motor. if you have a single stage filter meaning just one foam element replace it with a 2 stage or stock up on those I wouldn't bother cleaning them myself. If you clean them like recommended you not garenteed to totally get all of the dirt out. If you have a 2 stage filter (which I recommend) You have a better chance of protecting your engine. Remove the outer element and clean it DO NOT OIL the outer. Then clean and oil the inner element.
