Okay, I was putting in the Wasp .28 today, and I found I had a little bit of trouble with meshing the spur gear with the clutchbell. I doubled up a thing of shop towel and stuck it in between. Then tightened the motor mount screws. Afterwards it was WAY too tight and the spur gear would hardly move.

I remembered when i had the .46 I had to just do it by hand, so that's what I did. It took me like 10 minutes of adjusting before I had the mesh right.

How do you guys mesh the gears?

Most ppl just put some paper inbetween the gears and then tighten it down funny thing is i did this just the other day after removing the engine then i just cot some plastec from one of the skrew bags from when i bought skrews and put it inbetween there. Worked like a charm!

However before yesterday i just did it by hand but even then it only took me like at most 5 min.

Yeah, i've tried the paper thing and it never work for me. I dunno, when I mesh my gears, i like to put pressure on the clutchbell and spur gear.

On my ntc3 I double up the shop towel and it work great with an absolute perfect mesh.

Dude, its all in how it feels. I do it all by hand and how it feels. :D

I snug up the engine bolts just enough so I can move the motor but not too loose where it will move on its own. I hold the CB and rock the spur and I'll move the engine till the backlash is just right. Takes 5 min.

I use a strip of plastic from a parts bag. Hasn't failed me yet.

Kwong when did you get a savage?
I use a piece of plastic.

Um, whenever the savage 21 came out. lol, I just never have the thing running anymore.

What kinda plastic piece do you guys use?

The plastic bag trick here too. The thick plastic the spur comes packaged in. Cut a strip of it, but it between the spur and CB, line up the engine, squeeze the two together tightly and snug down the engine. Pull out the plastic.

You know Kwong maybe you are trying to get it a bit too tight.

I have found the savage mesh isn't quite as testy as the T-maxx or the electrics.

I set me gear mesh about hrmm 3 months ago and hadn't touched it in forever. I was checking battery/brake power and noticed when I hit the gas the engine moved.

All my motor mount screws were loose, and the mesh was waaaay off. That's when I realized mesh doesn't have to be too tight on the savage.. It had run for 3-5 tanks with the engine loose as all heck and didn't strip.

I think that with other rigs there is a fair amount of chassis/motor mount flex. So on the other rigs(t-maxx and other light chassis) if the mesh isn't right any acceleration or hard breaking will move the engine(chassis flex) and strip it right off. On the savage the engine is pretty solid, you don't get a lot of sideways flex so a little play in the spur is ok. Too tight a spur may not strip but it can cause just as mny other issues. Bearings etc.

I do the paper trick or the feel it. After I get done doing the mesh, I try to get the spur to slip. Also when I go the spur gear by hand I look for a sound.
