My antenna wire is quite short and I lose control about a block away, can I just add any wire onto it?

That depends. Was your antenna wire short to begin with? On AM and FM systems, the antenna length is specifically set based on the frequency band that you're operating on. By shortening or lengthening the antenna, you can actually cause the system to work worse than before. If you're still at the stock length, I'd recommend keeping it there.

I got it used and It looks really rough at the end like it got scraped off, it was just tied to the roll bar deal, When I go more than a city block away I lose a connection, I'll just throw a new RX into it.

I'd think about going 2.4ghz system great distance. And also you could just splice the wire and add more to it. I'd use some type of clamp or soider.

If you're going to try to fix it, you'd need to know what receiver it is, what band it's on (27 or 75) and what the current antenna length is. Then a bit of internet legwork to find out what the appropriate length is supposed to be. Then it's just a matter of resoldering a full length of 24 gauge (I think) wire to the receiver board. That's about it. It's pretty simple once you know the proper length.

Or you could just use a new receiver...:)
