Hobbywing 3660 with 3150kv or 3700kv ? Monster slash 2wd.

I heard that it would be alot of fun to try 3s on a 2wd and i think its nice to feel the power even if i dont go full throttle and ill have more torque with the 3660. But I'm still not sure between spektrum and hobbywing.

In the summer i need to gear down so it will help a little in the summer.

There are higher kv than that with 3s approval BUT there is a "thing"
(There's ALWAY'S a "thing")
You need to bear in mind that these ratings are also left to some "interpretation".
Lets leave voltage out of it for a second.
Just as with a traditional brushed motor, a 13.5 turn brushed could push along a 4x4 offroad but a 17.5 or a 21 turn would labor to move the same car.
Equally, a 13.5 motor doesn't really belong in a touring class, onroad car.
Too much torque, not enough top end speed or efficiency.
That 17.5 or 21 turn BELONG in the on-road or 2wd car.

The new Brushless motors, while still rated for 2s or 3s... are rated this way but are based on the idea that there are weight limits and rpm limits that must be adheared to.
Castle's motor pages show what I mean in their specs on their site.

Read on the "specifications" the recommended size and weight for the motor, even though it is rated at 3s its not rated for 1/8 scale, nor on-road.

3700 might be a little too much zip, I would personally choose the 3150kv because you could run 2s and 3s batteries and still be good.
3s and a 3150kv 3660 size motor is PLENTY!
 
3s *anything* in a light 2wd is enough. Let alone a 3660 can (which is longer, heavier, and has a bigger chance of getting banged up and/or messing up the g'box it's hanging off).

I agree, a 3650 size motor would suffice. I once overpowered a Losi 22s SCT with a 3660, it just caused more slipper clutch wear and was hard on the diff.
 
So the 3660 is too much for the Slash anyways...
I don't know enough about the Slash to argue or try.
Just throwing out there that Castle recommends a 3660 for the Slash SCT.
I don't know if 4x4 or and redesigns play part in this motor choice.
I agree that the 3652 motor I have is an absolute animal in my (likely heavier) 4x4 1/10 scale. In a lighter 2wd, I can't imagine it would be very "drivable" unless your slipper is bomb and fire proof!!!

I have a 3660 in mine (4000kv) on 2S and it's plenty for me. Although people say I should move up to 3s, which I could but I already have too much batteries in my collection between the 4 cars I mainly run. Plus I would have to change out my plugs.

I can tell you, the 3660 does add alot of weight. Just by guessing, I know my slash weight distribution is probably 60/40 or 70/30 rear/front due to the 3660 longer motor, and heavy axles. On the track it either likes to nose dive or nose up when in the air. I plan on going back to Traxxas plastic axles which should shave off a good bunch of weight and might see a slight speed increase.

I run a 3652 (4000kv) on 2S on my rustler and that's a good setup. Good speed, but doesn't have the low end torque like the longer 3660.

Yes 3660 is recommend in 4wd SCTs due to the whole car being heavier and added front drivetrain. My uncle used to run a 550 motor in his SCTEs back in the day, which were 3670 motors. Also because usually, longer can sizes like 3660 has a bigger and stronger motor shaft (5mm) compared to 3652s or smaller (3.175 shaft)

Personally in my original reply I said 3660 since he is running bigger monster truck tires. Because of the larger tires, a bigger motor shaft would make the setup more durable. And due to the can being longer, he can atleast have some kind of torque, instead of cogging at lower throttle inputs. Sure, a 3652 could work, but in my test with bigger tires it would get more hot than a 3660. (My tests were made with only using 4000kv motors and on 2s, I cannot speak for lower kv motors and higher voltage inputs, currently. Edit: Both of my cars were running the same 23/86 gearing. )

So how does your truck do with slippers?
Just fine. My rusty has replacement clutch pads (truck is 4 years old but the whole transmission is more like 9 since it was the stock one out of my slash so it's to be expected)

Replaced the clutch pads in my slash with hot racing pads and they had been doing good. That does have the 272R in it and that's 2 years old.
 
Ok. So with a couple years of use, this trans/motor hasn't detonated with the 3660 4000kv 2s.
The possibility for gear destruction with bigger tires seems real enough when stepping to 3s.
The lower Kv 3660 would have to be my choice without actual #'s
My Gorgon came stock with a 550 brushed. It fits a 3660 motor as well.
This makes sense.
 
Yea. The new 223s fury which is the same gorgon chassis, it uses a 3650 (4000kv) motor. But they have a 5mm shaft in it, but they have the wires coming out of the back of the end bell, instead of the top of the can so it can fit in the chassis.

The weight might have made them choose the 52mm can?

The wires were the fitment issue so that seems like an easy fix.
