good morning everybvody . i am a new member and i need some help... i already own an on road car and now i want to bring a new member to the family...a truck.after research i have found out that the savage 4.6 is a wonderful beast..but i was thinking of putting on it the engine of the savage 5.9 and also a 3 speed transmission...so i would have the savage x with the engine of the savage xl...would u recomend this to me or should i keep it out of the box?... thank you a lot

Well to be perfectly honest the engine from the 5.9 is rather disapointing for most people. Just because it is bigger does not always mean more power. Personally I say your best bets for the basher would be the LRP .28Spec 3, LRP .30Spec 2 or the Picco P.28. All great engines and very easy to tune and put out great power. All of them are in the sub-$200 range. Same price but a much higher quality engine than the HPI 5.9 engine. However there is really nothing wrong with the 4.6 engine that comes on the X 4.6 truck. As far as the three speed goes there are advantages and draw backs to the mod. Plus....you get a bit more top end speed. Your low end is also a bit lower than stock. Minus....all the metal in the transmission greatly increases the rotating mass of the truck. So say it will slow you down a bit on take-off. I have never really noticed this myself but I never really paid much attention. If it does it is minimal.

thank you alot ...you have been of great help...

No problem at all. Where are you located I may be able to help you find the engines I was talking about if you need assistance. Let me know.

i live in lebanon...u wont know anything..hehehhe there is only one place to buy hpi from and no where else...here in lebanon this hobby is not yet so popular......thx anw

I have an original S-25 (before the X came out) and even with the smaller 4.1 engine it pulls wheelies and is a monster. I have the three speed upgrade (plus reverse) and just upgraded to the easier to access X trans case and the high speed 3rd gear from the Flux.

They are tough trucks no doubt and I think you'll be very happy with the X's 4.6. Use that first and then when it's worn out upgrade to one of the engines suggested...

HTH...

i just put a new 3 speed into my savage x 4.6, awesome upgrade if you ask me, but right now i have a problem with my mill, the 4.6 is a great truck, you will love it. kdogg

i was thinking of putting on it the engine of the savage 5.9 and also a 3 speed transmission

The 5.9 engine is really bad, I have a 4.6 and it runs rings around my friends 5.9. The 4.6 is easier to tune, less air leaks, more fuel economical.

I do not like the three speed as the difference is not really noticeable apart from the 3rd shift unless you go for the 10% taller 3rd gear, even then the extra maintenance is not worth it IMO.

oh ok...then for the first month i'll keep it as it is with the 4.6 engine and the 2 gears...then we'll see...thank you very much

That's the best thing to do. Concentrate on break in and tuning, and get to know your new truck in general. Then you will easily be able to decide what upgrades are for you.

I put the three speed in my Savage X along with the high speed 3rd gear and I absolutely love it. Awesome upgrade IMO. What extra maintence cost? All I did was buy the parts, install them, and adjust the shift points. The whole thing took me about an hour.

is it true that it makes 50 mph out of the box?

More like 40-45. The Savage is a fairly heavy truck. Only because of how well built it is HPI puts some real quality into their rigs. That's why i put the three speed with the taller third gear in it to give it more top end speed.

My Savage does 50+ but then again it has the LPR .30, three speed w/the taller third gear. It is faster than it needs to be for sure.

At 40mph, a savage is a handful. It stands fairly tall and has a high center of gravity which makes turning at anything more than a slow jog results in a tip over.

It won't be anything like the onroad car that you have. But all the places your onroad car won't go, the savage will. ;)
