Helping a friend getting his losi mini 8ight running

He ordered a new pinion. He got a 14t 1/8 bore pinion. His motor is a 2mm shaft. would this from robinson racing be good for his setup? Also kit gearing should be .5 mod as well right?

Yeah, according to the manual, one of the pinion gear part numbers is LOSB1863. That is a mod .5 gear. So that pinion you linked should be correct.

Those things are a lost cause and a money pit. Your friend should just get rid of it and buy something current. Let me know when it's for sale and I'll help him get rid of that junk.... Lol
