I removed my VX-18 engine from my car. When I removed the clutch bell (double gear) a spring fell out.The spring appears to have wrapped around the clutch. It now fits about 3/4 of the way around, in a groove, with no stretch. One end has a loop, the other end appears to be broken off. Is this spring supposed to be looped all the way around? What does it connect to?

On another note...The piston stops short of the sleeve top by about 1.5 mm. The sleeve looks great where the piston rides but there is some minor scoring on the top 1.5mm of the sleeve..from combustion? Is this ok?

that spring is the clutch spring, they are very cheep to replace.. and yes it is BROKE. it loops around the clutch and the 2 end hook together.. when the motor spins it expands and the pads grab the clutch bell.. thus.. throwing your car rapidly forward lol.... do not try to fix the spring. it wont work just by a new one, i think there bout $5 your piston sleave sounds fine minus the scoring.. make sure you clean and re-oil your filter everytiime you run your car.. it sounds like fine peices of dirt are getting into your combustion chamber... that will rune your motor

Some scoring on the top of the piston can be a result of running the car to lean and driving the operating temperature too high. If you're new to tuning a nitro engine, I recommend getting an infrared thermometer to monitor engine temps so you're not running too hot.

I removed the sleeve and piston from the engine. Did I read on here some where that if the piston can go past the sleeve top that they need replacing??
It clears the sleeve top by about 1/8th inch.

Did it clear that before you took the engine apart? I have never seen one come that far above. they will come up a little. 1000th of a inch. That is what shims are for.

Place your engine back toghter. Insure the piston is placed in the right way. It only fits one way. After you place the head back on take a piece of sodor and place it in through the glow hole and bend it over so the sodor goes in between the head and the piston. Turn over the engine by hand. This will crush the sodor so you can use a pair of calipers to measure the piston spacing from the head. You will need to look up your engine info on line for the engine you have to determine what spacing you want.
