Yeah, tough guys use their thumbs... I'm not one of those since I type on a keyboard all day. No callouses... I use the plastic end of my tuning screwdriver.
As for figuring out where your piston is at, you can also take out the glowplug and look down the hole as you turn the flywheel. When the piston is the furthest from the top, that is BDC (bottom dead center). However, this method leaves you prone to getting junk in the engine.
So the "roll the flywheel one way until you feel pressure, roll it the other until you feel pressure and leave it in the middle" method usually works. However, if you have a pull-start, the OWB (one way bearing) on the starter will grab and you won't be able to turn it. So, turn it the other direction until you feel resistance, then keep turning until you feel it go over the top (compression stroke), then leave it about 1/4 turn past that point.
Or, clean the engine head really well, pull the plug, turn the flywheel until the piston is at BDC, then mark the side of the flywheel for a reference as to where it is. Every time you put that mark in the reference spot, the piston is at BDC and you don't have to do it by feel or by looking down a glow plug hole.
