When you say make sure the wires are connected properly to the motor, how does one know which goes to which?

I've heard they could be connected any way and it should at least still work.
It won't necessarily harm anything (at least on a 3 wire motor) that I know of, it will just spin the wrong direction. Or it will chatter vs spin.

I found out ABC really matters on a sensored setup. Thought my MMX/2200kv was broken, then noticed I had ACB (I didn't notice the markings on the motor). Once I plugged it in proper, it stopped chattering and spun. With a non sensored, I think it just spins backwards if they are wrong.

Any ideas on the cheapest ESC I can get to test this? Seems the motor is 55A max draw.
i know there are a ton of cheap chinese ebay ESCs, personally id go with a decent company like HW or Castle or maybe find an arrma esc.
might be able to find a new-take off from kit breakers (try jennysrc) or even ebay.
ESCs imo are too important cheap out on to an extent. I'm not saying blow hundreds on one, but (again imo) you want quality over thriftiness.

Well... the easiest thing would be, instead of burning money and fighting with something that is 15+ years old, I'd just get a decent 1/8th system that's current and go from there.

For ~$100, get an arrma blx185 and arrma 2000kv motor:

https://jennysrc.com/products/arrma...-outcast-ar106044?_pos=1&_sid=a698424a3&_ss=r

Then your a lot less likely to fry more packs, your receiver/servo and another esc. Then maybe try plugging that motor into it later to see what it does.

My personal recommendations:

1. Don't buy MaxAmps batteries. They are way over priced.
2. Trash the ESC and Charger. Set the motor on the shelf incase you might want to try it again later.
3. Purchase a cheap RTR combo like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WP-8BL100-...061779?hash=item3650287193:g:aOgAAOSw5R5dFkL2
4. If looking for cheapest charger that gets the job done maybe something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HTRC-imax-...iMh-NiCD-Battery-Balance-Charger/383042762754

Otherwise there are plenty of better chargers on the market.

Pick up some decent LiPos with modern connectors like xt90 and call it a day.

Also just to confirm, did you have your series wiring like this?

I found out by accident once that wiring the batteries wrong will just make the esc let out the magic smoke.
