Hi all,

I've never had a nitro RC before and struggling with my new HPI savage 35 RTR. I bought it nearly new and was told it was run in. I managed to get it running ok but it wasn't shifting in to second gear, just as i realised this the fuel ran out. A few hours later i decided to give it another bashing and the engine would run but no power was going through to the wheels, no matter how much gas it wouldn't move.

First question, have i burnt the clutch out? I did mess about with the low speed needle if that helps!

Second question, is there somewhere that I can take it to that will have a look at it for me?? (I'm from th UK and live in Watford) I've been to my local RC store and as they don't stock HPI and I didn't buy it from them there hardly forth coming with advice! I know it's the cheats way out but i'm happy to pay someone to fix it if anyone knows somewhere I can take it. It would also be cool if I could go somewhere that will show me the basics on tuning and maintenance

Thanks for reading and hope you can help.

Jim

Did you get the manual when you bought this used? If not, here is the one for the X 4.6, should be similar. Someone else may have the manual for the 3.5.

Basic maintenance and tuning can be found in this PDF, should be very similar for all Savage Models.

Check that your brake isn't bound up. You may need to adjust your trim or servo linkage. To check the clutch, start by removing the engine then clutch bell and inspect the clutch shoes. While the engine is out, check the spur gear and slipper clutch. If the slipper had come lose during the first run you'll need to tighten it down, not too tight! This may explain the truck not shifting into second gear.

If that doesn't solve it, with the engine still out, see if the drive system rolls without binding by rolling the chassis on the floor. If you feel resistance, stop.

Unless you'd been jumping the truck, it's unlikely the front or rear diffs were damaged in your first run. Given it's a used vehicle you never know what the previous owner did. If the truck's rolling to a point then stopping, check the front then rear diffs for broken bevel gears.

It's not nearly as intimidating once you've taken it apart once.

Cheers JessF, Igive it the once over tonight and fingers crossed I can get it running again!

Well, take the body off, fire it up and see what spins and what doesn't. That will help you track down where your power loss is.

I don't know what you know about these at all, so I won't go into lengthy detail. You mention that you've never had a nitro rc before, but didn't mention if you had a hobby grade electric rc before.

Don't take these points as an insult, it's just a gauge to us for what you know so we can help.

Do you know what these are?:
1) Clutch bell.
2) Spur gear.
3) Slipper clutch
4) Transmission input shaft.
5) Transmission (whole)
6) Center axles/bones
7) Differential
8) Outer axles/bones
9) Wheel hex

Basically, those are all the main points and the order you look for movement when the engine is running and you have it on the ground. If you follow that order of parts and figure out where the spinning stops, then that helps isolate where your problem is.

Was wondering if it has a 2 speed with or with out reverse?I have a savy X SS with reverse and sometime when you hold the brake too long it will partialy shift to reverse and does not engage the tranny at all, gives you a neutral type of revving.Other than that i have bashed my savage quite a bit and have never had a tranny issue so it would be right where Olds pointed you,Gratz and good luck with your savage good choice especially for a beginner to nitro RC
