Well, I picked up my new puppy today that I've been waiting for months for. Its a Rodesian Rigeback. They are African dogs bred for hunting lions. No, they don't attack the lions, but they have to be able to hold their own. This puppy is 10 weeks old and weighs 20 lbs. already.

And this one shows the ridge on their back.

Oh check out that sexy puppy, LOL, looks like a beastly puppy dogie, especially for 10 weeks.

Just as a pet, they are a rare breed so not too many have heard of them. But I have to say, this is the calmest puppy I have ever seen. He has only barked for about 5 minutes when we put him in the crate for a nap lol. Other than that perfectly quite. Loves to crawl and sleep on you lol.

Man, you're so lucky.... My dad wont let us get a dog because he thinks all they do is poop on the carpet  O well..... lol

I've heard of that breed, just never saw one before. I didn't know they were actually named for a ridge on the dog's back.
I can guarantee, as long as you have him, you'll never have a problem with lions roaming around your yard in New Hampshire.

they get freaking huge....does he have the opposable digit on his front paws?...they are known for actually grabbing things......way cool dog....hope you have a big place cause he gets the size of a small pony when he grows up.....

Congrats on your new puppy.rodesian ridge backs are great dogs .. I think i told you before they are a lot like boxers. The way they act. I own boxers and have owned 2 ridge backs.. Be very gentle with him and let him no you are the master. Do you have cats??? If so you mite want to keep them away from him..
IF you think he is just a puppy and he will calam down your wrong

One of my Dad's friend's had one when I was a kid, man that thing was huge, but a very well tempered dog. Cool!

No they don't were did you here that I have had 2 of them they get no bigger then a boxer!!

Sounds cool ZANDOR, as for size males run anywhere from 75-95 lbs. and females usually 70-80lbs. The breeder has about 20 of these Rodesians and the biggest is a male, i think 88 lbs. or something.

Rolex, you're right, he'll keep all the lions out of NH :D

I used to see a guy in central park w/ one and it was about the size of a big sheppard...and it used to actually hook his paw around my leg and yank me......the guys aid that was something to do w/ the way they hunted and caught animals??!?!?! I thought is was cool as hell...he'd just sweep people of their feet......but the digit I guess was like a high claw?? if that makes sense....but I think he was bigger than a 70 - 80 lb dog for sure........close to 100 I thought

If it was a male it could have been close to 100, they aren't usually that big but there are some. As for the digits, yes these dogs do have them, but they were removed at a very young age. I don't know of them catching any animals, but they are bred to hunt lions.

Thats what boxers and rodesian do they use there front paws a lot they bounce like tiggers because thats what they do best is bounce lol

nice dog. a bit too big for me though. I've known a few people with ridgebacks and they have all been well behaved. on the big dog note, a friend of mine has a mastiff, that thing is just rediculous, it takes up the ENTIRE back seat of his jetta and then some. well over 100lbs. lemme see if i can find a pic. I've always wanted a boxer, but that has to wait till i buy a house.

found some. these are all taken by mike (the owner) no photoshop necessary
also this dog
