Good torquey pipe for the revo.

Very interesting olds,on one of the used revos i picked up has a trinity pipe on it and is the loudest pipe i have heard.lol in the pile of extras he gave me i found a bigblock side pipe with a hole in the side where it looks like he did the same thing you did with the jb weld. when i first saw it in the pile i said and i quote"what the hell happened to this thing?" Well now i think i know what happened to it.lol. good luck with the trinity pipe, i like mine even though it is on a 3.3,but it did make a decent amount of performance out that old tired mill.

Yeah, either my primer bulb is being weird or the XTM doesn't like the rear header/pipe combo because after running it today... I'm glad I only paid $20 for that pipe. Doesn't run good. I tried rerouting the fuel lines to be more like stock, but didn't have any real effect. Couldn't get it to tune cool like usual and when I got the temps down, it was so overly rich that it would flood while at half throttle and stall on me. Was really strange. Like the primer wasn't allowing the pressure to go through things right or something.

So, I stopped at the hardware store, picked up a brass fitting and some hi-temp epoxy type stuff to give the BB pipe without a header another try. I also ditched the bulb.

Well, I went back to a side pipe. I want something that's durable and the rear pipe is tough to make that way. When I ran it last weekend, it got squished a bit and the pipe hangers got fairly bent, then came disconnected from the engine. Besides, it kind of tuned poorly as well. So, with a hack saw and some re-enforced silicone tube, I extended one of my headers a bit so I could get the back of the pipe away and down to clear the roll bar and body.

Still a decent amount of clearance from the tire too:

It didn't require me to mangle the body I'm running much either. Just a few relief areas with the dremel so it wasn't rubbing on the mount or the header.

Will hopefully make it through the day without coming disconnected from the header and if I remember right, the tune should be much better as well.
 
Ran it for two hours straight today. Probably the longest run since it was a slayer! Ran great, nice and cool with tons of power. I think I can actually gear up a bit.
 
Couple of questions for you Olds:
1. What gearing are you currently running and what are you thinking of gearing up to?

2. When you drilled out the stock pipes stinger, what size did you enlarge it to?
I picked up a Revo roller with a 3.3 that I'm rebuilding and it came with the original Traxxas pipe - which I've never liked.
I have an old NovaMega 2680 1/10th scale on-road pipe that has a 4.87mm ID stinger.
The original Traxxas pipe has a 5.2mm ID stinger and was pondering drilling out the NovaMega (or given folks comments about THS pipes just leaving it in the used pile and springing for a THS pipe).

General question - THS has two pipes that interest me - THS1046 and THS146C.
Can anyone provide pros and cons of each model?
The description of the 146C says "You will gain more top end then with THS1046 set, Great for the 3.3."
Sounds like it might give up some bottom end torque to the 1046 while providing more top end.
Just wondering if anyone has seen both in action and can provide some perspective...
I don't really want to give up too much noticeable bottom end torque.
 
1) I think I'm running 15/38 now. I wouldn't go up much, but maybe to 16/38 as long as it doesn't stand the engine up too much and get in the way of things. The places I have to run are smaller, so top speed isn't a great concern, but acceleration and wheelies are. Lower gearing is hard on the trans, I know, but I roll on the throttle most of the time. Or I don't hit WOT until it's moving at a decent speed.

2) A hair over 1/4". I think I drilled it, then dremel'd it a bit to clean it up.
 
Wow a 1/4 inch - that stinger must have been paper thin.
To leave any structural integrity I was thinking that 15/64 was pushing it.

What size is your XTM and did it help at all?
I realize that you eventually went with what looks like an 1/8th scale side pipe, but since I'm looking to do this with a 3.3 I'm pondering if I can get away with drilling out the old .15 pipe as I still need to pop for a steering servo.
 
It's pretty thin, but still plenty strong to hold a ziptie. ;)

For a 3.3, you may be able to get away with it. You will notice more pop out of it when you drill it out.

The XTM pipe was also a BB pipe, it was just one I don't care about. It was from an old XTM 21 t-maxx conversion. It jacked up the tune pretty bad doing what I did to it. Once I put the side pipe back on, it was no contest. Power was great, tune was solid, ran it for a couple hours without missing a beat. Felt good to run the thing again and not be annoyed at it.

I think that thing is just a chromed old dual chamber revo pipe like I had! I can't remember if I bothered drilling it out or not. Once I realized what it was, I ran it hoping it would be better... it wasn't, so I threw it in a drawer out of my sight as I was somewhat annoyed with myself.

I had already drilled out a stock Revo pipe just to see what it would look like before drilling into a pipe I cared about.
Yep, it's thin - but it will hold a zip tie... lol

Soon as the steering servo and a couple of other parts arrive I'll put it back together and see how it runs.
Given some of the comments I've read, I'll probably eventually spring for a THS pipe, but this should get it up and running (hopfully) better than a stock pipe.
