How can you tell if the glow plug is still useable? It seems like I install a new glow plug for each tank.

I would say that your glow ignitor is not working right. Do you ahve a rechargable or a dry cell type? Either charge it, or change the battery.

actually it does. Has yours ever started dieng while your trying to use it? Its happened to me a few times. That is why I always have a d cell spare.

If the glow igniter was running low, why would it light up a new glow plug and not an old or used one? Do the older plugs require less voltage to light up?

Why would a flat glow charger suddenly start to make a new plug glow, when it didn't an old one???

I think you may have misinterpreted the original question! Sorry!

When batteries are low, sometimes they can get a little charge back if you just let them sit for a little while... Weird how that works...

Ok everyone, Read the original post. He wants to know how to tell if the GP is good or usable. Not about glow starters.

Here is your answer: hook the glow plug into a fully charged glow starter (out of the engine) and see if it glows bright orange/yellow. If the entire coil glows your plug is good. If the tip of the wire going to the case stays black, its going bad but will still work with fully a charged starter. If the coil is deformed or doesn't light, its bad. You shouldn't have to replace a plug every tank of fuel. If you are having to do that, then you need to work on tuning your carb.

I have had the same plug in since break in and I am at about a gallon and a half now.

yea in my 4-tec i have been using the same plug for 2 years lol. no need to change it yet. i have run about a million gallons through my 4 tec, i have the pro.15 one. and on my hyper pbs, i still use the same plug from break in, i have about 1 1/2 gallons through it now. it has the stock 8-port in it. my car starts on the first or second pull every time, your glow plug will stay good for years if your motor is tuned right.

That's impossible, for sure. I've never heard of one lasting even a gallon.
Here's a useful link to everything you need to know about glow plugs.

rolex this is actualy the first time i dissagree with you ...
i have been using the same glow plug in my savage since i bought it I'm at just over 1 gallon right now and holding my breath LOL

It's just that I've never seen anyone's glow plug last that long, no matter what kind of engine it was in or whatever kind of fuel they ran. I'm probably getting a little over half to 3/4 of a gallon, and I've been happy with that. Break in glow plugs usually need to be replaced after break in when tuned for performance.
Any special brand giving long life?

really....mine last maybe 1/2 gallon when I'm tuned good....when it was cold here (you know it dropped to a frigid 43deg) I blew one every time my engine stopped.....I was running real rich but every time I chceked it looked like it got cooked from being too lean......I ran 3 tanks and 3 plugs that nite......I believe they'll last longer than a gallon but mine don't do it for me...

If you're going through a glow plug every other tank, you're most likely running too lean. Running too rich can do it too but is less likely.

that was a rare instance I had where I think the air temp being cold and wet and the engine still running at 230 as soon as it stopped running it cooled fast and fiddlesticked the coil up, it was clean but the coils was twisted real bad....I just gave up that nite after 3 tanks and 3 plugs.....

Okay.....well during my last outing, right before I put my tmaxx up for the day...I took my plug out and hooked it up to my glow starter and the coil lit up about half way. Is this an indication that its still good??

You mean the coil lit on the bottom half and not the top, or it wasn't glowing brightly? If its not lighting all the way up the coil, your plug is going bad.

What are the best glow plugs??
I really like the dynamite/mccoy plugs, but they can sometimes be a pain to start.
The traxxas hot plugs are the easiest to start in my opinion, but they burn out too quick.
I was thinking about going down the OS 8 road, but i don't know alot about them.

My engines :
mach .15 in the xxxnt
2.5 in the tmaxx
soon to be monster gt TT.21 engine

I want a plug that I can use in ALL engines.. ( i hate keeping up with different this, and different that)
Any recommends/suggestions??
