You need to do that regularly. The water build up inside the tank will cause the tank to rust from the inside out where you won't see it. Then as pressure builds up, you can wind up with a dangerous compressor.
I open the bleeder valve as soon as I'm done. I might not run the compressor for a couple of months, but I leave it open so it can dry out on the inside.

If I did that, I would turn it on and walk away for the tank to fill up. When I came back and it's still running, I would spend an hour trying to figure out WTF was going on.
