RC Driving Style
I will be a newbie nitro racer this year at a local track. I have spent the winter compiling some of the equipment I wanted to start with, RC10GT, JR xs3 radio and servos, and a Proline body. I have been looking into a few other things and looking for advice as to which way to go. I want to enjoy racing and dont want to spend a fortune, but also dont want to buy garbage and am willing to spend the necessary money to have decent equipment. My thoughts were the following:
1) Tiger drive - good or bad?
2) What should I look for in an Rx battery pack (cell numbers, company, etc)?
3) Temp guage?
4) I have heard the factory glow plug ignitor is garbage, any suggestions?

Thank you.

Ok you have a great start on what you want.

Tiger drive not too sure if those are race legal. You would best opt for a decent starter box. Bashing If it fits I would get it...cuz I am curious on them.

RX packs The higher is current rate the better, I have a 2300 Mah 6v RX pack and that gives my servos a nice push. You need a 5 cell not a 4 cell. TO achieve the optimum performance out of your servos , you need a 5 cell pack.

Temp gauges are so cheap now, I have a Raytek and a Tempgun one. Both are good but the Raytek has a ncie little laser pointer to use for more accuracy.

Glo ignitor I suggest getting a Hobbico 1.5 cell and a clip on attachement. Best one to use IMO

Good luck

I think in the newest issue of rcca, they said that drills would have a hard time starting an engine, because the gears in the tiger drive are geared for the plane type starters that spin way more rpms than drills.

What is the run time of an Rx pack (5 cell, somewhere near 2300mah)? Just wondering if I need 2 or if 1 is enough.

Well fully charged I can run close to 2 hours. That is me though. Look at your servo current draw spec and see what it is per hour. I personally like to have 3. I have one to use in each of the two cars I run and a back up.

One and a back up rx pack are ok. Look to see if you need a "hump" pack or a inline pack,I'm guessing a hump. Clip on rechargeble glow ing. are the way to go,get one with a guage on it to check the condition of the glow plug. Yeah temp guages are cheap anymore I have a Duratraxx, one works fine.
Do a starter box!!!!! I would not mess with a Tiger drive. If you get a good box you can get a power panel with a glow ignightor on it. This will work the best, and keep your other one as a back-up.
Remember tires are the biggest and best change you can make to your truck(IMO). Find out what the locals are running, the winners that is!

I planned on checking on tires in the spring.

With a starter box (real newbie to nitro here), do I keep the pull start assembly attached to the motor, but just never use it - or is there something different I need to do to the motor to use the starter box? I did a quick check on Tower and saw they had an Associated starter box for $65 and a Duratrax universal for like $50 (not a huge fan of Duratrax though). Is the Associated recommended, or is there a different one I should look into.

Based on what I have been reading I should order the following:
Starter box (perhaps the Associated)
Hobbico Accu Glow II Power Panel
Hobbico 12v battery
Hobbico charger

I checked into the glow ignitors, can't find a 1.5???? Do you mean the Hot Shot with 1500mah battery????

Where did you get a Rx pack with 2300 Mah? What type of configuration (i.e. 3x2 hump pack)? Where can I buy one and for how much?
