I've been really getting into micro racing, and have been using my garage quite a bit as a track. So far, it's been just running on the concrete floor, and using cones, pvc pipes, and pipe insulation as track walls/borders.
I've decided I want to step up my game a bit and set up a better track surface.
RCP tracks are available, but they are very pricey and aren't quick to set-up or break down. There are a numerous videos on YT with people using foam floor tiles for mini z tracks and the consensus is very positive. After searching around, I found the best deal from Walmart.com: 24 2'x2' tiles for $50. It sat in my cart for over a month, just because I don't know if I would actually like driving on the material and if setting up and breakdown would be more of a hassle than I would care for. After going back and forth, I finally decided to pull the trigger on it. Since they are returnable to the store, I figured I've really got little to lose.
There were 3 large boxes sitting outside of my garage when I came home today from work. I decided to open just one box, and see how it is to assemble and how my rc would actually run on this surface. Well, I'm happy with the actual assembly(and breakdown) of the tiles, and the cars runs on it very well with good cornering traction.
I think a full track set up with about 56 pieces and setting up walls will take about 20min, and probably a little quicker to break down. So, about 40min total to set up and breakdown whenever I want to use it. I think this will be ok and not become too arduous. We'll see!
Here's my first trial track with 24 tiles.

I love how hooked you are now. Especially since it's Mini Z's! But please don't let that snowblower claim a victim. Those little guys durable?

These Mini Z are fair in the durability dept. They have a buggy, and people race them with jumps.
Planning to use pipe insulation as a border around the entire outer perimeter of the track. The pipe insulation will also be lane borders. I'll have to wait until summer when the Dollar Store gets pool noodles, and that will add colors to the dark track.
I also learned about a free app that uses a cell phone camera for lap timing. I'll need to build a gantry to hold the phone over the track.

Very cool! I am now super jealous. The old pole barn out back is falling down. I've been waiting for a couple years for them to tear it down because it has what looks to be a very smooth concrete pad under it.

What are you thinking of using that concrete pad for?

There is a Hobbytown near me that has a neat little track set up inside.

The closest HT by me is about 25min away, is a smaller shop, and doesn't have a track.
There's an rc shop that has a large Mini Z track, but is an hour away. I would like to race there should I get good enough at racing these things.
This home set-up is to learn how to drive well enough to race.

I set up the full footprint after work today. The Toyota GT1 with race slicks did great, and as I had figured the new WLtoys rally, with the wide turning radius struggled on the tight track.

Are you getting good yet? Are we going to get to see a video?
I'm still pretty slow. The goal right now is just to be smooth. I'll try to do a video once I get a bit better.
Still need to build a gantry for the cell phone timing system.

You could always park Mrs X's car outside and make it bigger 🤣

Why move it? You could run a big figure 8 track from the drivers side, thru the hatch and back in the passengers side!
She'll LOVE it! 🤣
