Hey Guys,

Sorry for so many questions. LOL I am having quite the time trying to get these dang clutch shoes on. I believe I get the concept, but how in the heck do you get that little spring around those little posts? Also how do you know how tight to get the flywheel nut so that it does not come loose? Man, I got this far, and now I am having one heck of a time and I do not want to break those shoes.... They are just made of aluminum. Thanks again guys.

Tom

Clutch nut....as tight as you can, if you use locktite make sure it only goes on the threads and doesn't leak onto the flywheel.

Shoes/springs....I hate them....I use a tiny screw driver to slip it on the nut. It takes patients, after you do it once it gets easier.

I always liked to take an old flathead screwdriver and cut a VERY small, cylidrical bit out of the tip of the driver. This will make it a lot easier to hold one side of the spring and stretch it around.

Thanks guys... I am taking a break at the moment. I was getting so damn frustrated with it I just sat the mill down and stepped away for a few. I will give it another shot. Hey guys, about the flywheel nut, what do you use to tighten it down with? I didn't want to use a pair of plyers or a socket for fear of bending the shafts. What do you guys use? Also do you recomend locktite? Thanks

Tom

I use a giant set of Robo-Grips and I stick a paper towel or rubber pad between the jaws and the Flywheel....DO NOT GRIP THE POSTS....even if you scuff the edge of the flywheel it's not going to seriously hurt it...just look Hack...and most of my stuff looks hack anyway.....OH WELL IT RUNS......
the shoes I put the spring in th eshoe and fit the lower hole and spring coil over the post...slide it down till the small side is sitting on the nut.......push the spring just over the nut and it will sit there real tight....push down w/ the screwdriver (tweaks tip works great BTW) and push it til it just pops into that groove on the nut...

To tighten the flywheel nut, I use a long socket, usually a 10mm and hold the flywheel with with a set of pliers and ratchet that mother on there.

As to the clutch shoes, I'm guessing you're using a 3-shoe clutch? Plaids advice nails it for those, but the reality is, they are a beotch no matter what you do!

Thanks man... I am going to give it another shot. I am just trying to be as careful as I can not to damage anything. That is the last thing I want to do this far into it. I will get it, it will just take some time. I thought turnbuckles sucked! I think we may have eclipsed that!

i use a small alen key and poke it through the shoe and spring. then line it up on the post and push the alen key out with the post. this helps to line up the spring with the shoe and the post. then when you get it on just pop the spring down over the nut.

Yeah it is a three shoe clutch. I will try the deep socket. I will also put a bit of thread lock on the there as well. I didn't succeed last night, I will try again today. I just don't want to break those nice shiny blue aluminum shoes! Didn't Elvis sing about those... blue aluminum shoes? LOL

Tom

you wont break the shoes. You may, however, break the post the shoe rides on. I've done that a couple times.

you can buy a special tool made just for putting those springs on the clutch nut, called a clutch tool (obviously lol)
also i use a hot bodies 4-way wrench, it's brilliant. I personally don't use loctite as i have never (touch wood) ever had a problem with the clutch nut coming loose
