First hobby grade plane ??

It looks like it stopped RIGHT HERE!
Am I right??? 😮🤣

Can that that be repaired or is that a loss?
It could be repaired again, but the balance would probably be very off and it would make the flying wonky. I can just fly it when it is perfectly balanced, so I ain't got a shot if its wonky 🙄

I'm considering, (emphasise on considering) buying my 15yo son his first (our first) proper hobby grade rc plane for Christmas this year.

We've only ever had the cheap foam rc planes. A WLtoys Cessna 182 3ch and a FX Cessna 182 2ch.

He has shown interest in the past for flying but we are always disappointed by the handling and reliability of the above planes and the limitations of the requirement for perfect weather.

What would you recommend for a beginner?
It must be RTF as we don't have a controller.

I was considering the HobbyZone Carbon Cub S2 1.3m RTF Basic, as I've seen it recommended in the past and its within budget, just.

We don't know much about RC planes.
Are there other options within budget? Is that plane too expensive for a beginner?
S2 and the simple umx turbro timber.

These have a "Stunt" button. Hmm, I could do some damage with that.
A word of advice about these little guys, I have two micros, and the motors aren't strong enough to get out of trouble when using the stunt function.
I have a tough time just doing a big loop. However, they are fun to fly.
I also add that any breeze at all is hard on them. @WickedFog can tell you that.
I just about lost one when flying last summer out at the sand dunes. A breeze come up right after taking off and just about took off with it.

Then its time for the next level foam birdy, this its a medium sized 1.1 meter beginner bird with safe select, the mighty Trojan. I modded mine with a 3 blade prop and a little touch up paint. It is heavy and hauls tail in high winds.

Perfect upgrade. Don't get me wrong, the little guys are fun and they do have the training mode but
bigger planes are easier I would say.
I started with a HobbyZone Carbon Cub S2 with no complaints.
A upper mounted wing is a little bit more stable and easier to fly than a lower mounted wing.

True, Turning, pull back on the stick a little, trim it up and it will fly itself. This birdy comes with AX3X safe select, the shop manual shows how to program it into your spectrum. Bigger birds are actually more stable and you can pull back the power if you dont want to be a speed bullett.

Damn it. I just went to order the Carbon Cub S2 which I was watching on ebay, as recommended by you guys, but it's out of stock. It was by far the cheapest and the only one on ebay AU. It's more expensive in the hobby shops, not including the 2 hour drive to get it.

Is this one any good? Seem similar and it's readily available.
FMS 1300mm PA-18 Super Cub with Reflex V2 RTF

Listen up brother, Go get a new Turbo Timber umx, follow the instructions, there are tons of them out there, and they are also good beginner birds. I got one and it is fun as a barrel of crackers.

Thanks for the recommendation. Just quick look and can't see any of them available either.

Good point. Trying to get it for a Christmas gift though.
That does make it a bit trickier. As far as FMS goes, they make some nice planes, some of their landing gear could be sturdier in my opinion.

They make a lot of Horizon Hobbies planes, but to Horizon's specs. You will see a few of their planes are very similar.

Mr. Warby, hop on Ebay, type in any bird you want, there are tons of them. Try these, Cub s2, Turbo Timber umx Evolution, duette, FMS Ranger, its big and you can fly it in higher winds. Try those.

Thanks @Hobbydude2 . I have been. Ebay is where I do 99% of my RC shopping as I don't have a local HS close by.
No RTF Cub s2 or Turbo Timber umx available in AU, atm.

Whats available is the Hobbyzone Apprentice, FMS Cubs and Rangers.

Get the Hobbyzone Apprentice. That will fix you up. Make sure to understand the A3x safe select settings when you program your Specktrum Radio. Its very simple. When you bind your birdy it does it automatically. For your maiden flight, first just taxi around the ground. Blip the throttle, pull back on the throttle. Then go for a quick buzz a couple feet on the ground, gently reduce power and keep the nose up for the landing. Touch down on the main gear first. Do that a few times, then get it up in da air. use aileron to turn, and just do rectangle patterns, into the wind. Take off in the wind and land in the wind. always. remember the controls will be opposite when your birdy comes at you. just tap the stick to the wing you want to dip. Set up your approach, keep the speed up, but pull back on the power gently. It will sink, 5 inches off the ground flair the wings with back pressure on the stick and touch down. Pull the power. and always shut the power to the engine off! That will be $5 dollars. Heh!
